NEW LONDON, N.H. – December 10, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team received double digit scoring from five different players en route to an 88-57 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over Maine Maritime on Saturday afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer evens its record to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the NAC. The Chargers will return to action on Thursday, December 29 at St. John Fisher. Maine Maritime falls to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in conference play. The Mariners will host Maritime (N.Y.) on Friday, December 30 as part of the two-day Mariner Classic.
Freshman
Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) scored a game-high 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting and added nine rebounds. Sophomores
Jourdain Bell (Manchester, N.H.) and
Nate Cook (Burlington, Conn.) each scored 16 points. Freshman
Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore
Milani Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) was the fourth Chargers in double figures with 12 points.
Maine Maritime was led by junior Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine). He had 15 points and nine rebounds. Senior forward Sam Meklin (Rockland, Maine) finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and a game-high six blocks. Junior Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) contributed 14 points.
The game went back and forth for the opening 13 minutes of the first half before Colby-Sawyer slowly began to pull away. With the Chargers leading 24-23 at 6:43, Coffey poured in seven of the Chargers' next nine points to put the home team in front 33-25. Colby-Sawyer would then finish the final four minutes on a 12-1 run capped by a Hicks jumper with four seconds left. The Chargers led 45-26 at the break.
The Chargers held a comfortable lead throughout the second half and eventually went in front by 34 mid-way through the frame.
Colby-Sawyer won the glass 43-34 and turned 17 Maine Maritime miscues into a 17 points.
