POULTNEY, Vt. - January 16, 2016 - After Green Mountain took an 86-85 lead with 10 seconds left to play, Colby-Sawyer senior
Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.) grabbed an offensive rebound and made the game-winning bucket at the buzzer to lift the Chargers to a thrilling 87-86 road win at Green Mountain on Saturday evening.
The Chargers earn the series split this season with the Eagles with each team winning on the road. Colby-Sawyer improves to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in the NAC and will host Lyndon on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Gree Mountain drops to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the NAC.
Green Mountain struggled out of the gate giving up two quick three-pointers and then five consecutive points by
Peter Donato helped the visitors jump out to an early 15-6 lead. A Majong layup and two free throws gave the Chargers their largest lead of the night at 19-9 at the 16:22 mark of the opening half.
The Eagles' Thomas Brown scored seven-straight points to cut the lead to 22-16, then teammate Mychal Parker notched a pair of treys to bring the Eagles to within 24-22 with 11:16 remaining in the half.
After trading baskets over the next few minutes, Brown would convert an and-one play to even the score at 30-30 with 8:44 on the clock.
The Chargers would regain slim leads throughout the following five minutes, but the Eagles continued surging back and then took their first lead of the game when Javier Lugris made a layup. The team would go on to score the final seven points of the half capped by a Sampson Dale three-pointer to take a 43-36 lead into the break.
A Brown free throw just 47 seconds into the second half gave the home side its largest lead of the game, one it would hold until just seconds remained. Several times the Chargers made small runs to narrow the game to a few points, but each time the Eagles would respond with a mini-run of their own.
After Lugris' reverse layup with 1:34 remaining gave the Eagles an 84-79 lead, the Chargers hit two big three pointers by
Taylor Grande and Majong to hold an 85-84 advantage with 31 clicks remaining.
The Eagles' Dale muscled his way into the paint and pulled up for a 10-foot jumper to give the Eagles a slim 86-85 lead with 10 seconds left, but Majong corralled a three-point attempt by Grande, which was half-way down, and while in the air sank a jumper as time expired.
Majong led all scorers with 26 points while Grande hit five threes on his way to 20 points. Majong made four three-pointers to move into seventh on the all-time list with 161 career makes. Donato and
Jake Maynard also scored in double figures with 16 and 10 points, respectively.
Dale had a team-high 24 points for the Eagles while adding a game-high nine rebounds. Brown and Parker each tallied 19 points with Brown also hauling in seven boards.
