Chargers Split with UMF on Senior Day; Broughton Wins 300th

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 27, 2015 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team split a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games with the University of Maine at Farmington. Colby-Sawyer won the first game 4-1, while the Beavers took the night cap, 7-1.

Prior to the start of today's twin bill, Colby-Sawyer seniors Brett Emmertz (Falmouth, Maine), TJ O'Connor (Bethel, Maine) and Rob Wallace (Tewksbury, Mass.) were honored for their four years of dedication to the program.

With the 4-1 victory in game one, Colby-Sawyer Head Coach Jim Broughton earned his 300th career win with the Chargers.

GAME ONE – Colby-Sawyer 4, UMF 1

Senior Brett Emmertz opened the scoring for Colby-Sawyer in the fifth with a suicide squeeze to knock in Tim Donovan. Chris Hood then doubled home a pair of runs to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead. Hood then came around on a Brendan Thurber single to center field.

The Beavers got a run back in the top of the seventh on a Jordan Croteau single to left field that scored Tom Grady.

Hood led the Chargers with a pair of hits and two RBI. Brendan Thurber went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Nathan Frongillo extended his hitting streak to nine games.

Five different Beavers recorded single hits. Croteau was responsible for knocking in the lone UMF run.

Mike Bowse earned the victory on the mound after tossing a complete game. He gave up one run on five hits and struck out two.

Kyle Peterson also threw a complete game for UMF. He surrendered four runs on seven hits.

GAME TWO – UMF 7, Colby-Sawyer 1

In the second game, Dustin McCrossin produced UMF's first run in the nightcap with an RBI groundout in the first inning.

After Mark Leahy led off the third inning with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a groundout, Sean Cabaniss hit a sacrifice fly deep enough to center field for Leahy to trot home.

Farmington increased its lead with three runs in the fifth inning. McCrossin drove in his second run of the game with a single to left field and Tom Grady lined an RBI single to right field on the next play. Ethan Gouin roped a double down the left field line, allowing Grady and McCrossin to score.

Colby-Sawyer got on the board in the sixth off a miscue from the third baseman.

Croteau padded UMF's lead in the seventh inning with an RBI double to right field.

Jimmy Neal pitched a complete game three-hitter and struck out four Chargers.

Joe DiTullio-Dotto pitched 2.2 innings of relief and gave up just one unearned run on two hits.

Nathan Frongillo registered another hit to extend his hit streak to 10 straight games.
