Baseball Gets Two Wins at Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – April 26, 2015 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team won a pair of non-conference contests at Norwich, 8-3 and 6-0, on Sunday afternoon.

The Chargers improve to 3-29, while Norwich moves to 7-18 overall. The Chargers resume North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action tomorrow with a doubleheader at home against UMaine-Farmington.

Game 1 (Colby-Sawyer 8, Norwich 3)
Junior Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) made the start for the Cadets and pitched a complete game in the loss, allowing six hits and eight earned runs with seven strikeouts. Sophomore Jake Greaney (Groveland, Mass.) went the distance on the other end, limiting the Cadets to six hits and three runs in seven innings for the win.

Whaley allowed three runs in the first two innings before finding the groove to hold the Chargers scoreless in the next four innings. The visitors would break through in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs to extend the 8-0 lead. The Cadets rallied in the bottom frame, scoring three runs before Greaney forced a ground out play to seal the victory.

Freshman Brady Dion (Sabattus, Maine) was 2-for-2 and had a pair of walks to lead the Chargers at the plate. He added an RBI and scored once. Freshman Chris Hood (Manchester, N.H.) knocked in a pair of runs going 1-for-2.

Junior shortstop Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, while sophomore Brandon Pedley, freshman Drew Cadwell (Hanover, Mass.) and sophomore Matt Siroiseach recorded a hit with Pedley and Cadwell scoring a run for the Cadets.

Game 2 (Colby-Sawyer 6, Norwich 0)
Freshman Connor Henry (East Boston, Mass.) earned the win for Colby-Sawyer in the second game in his first collegiate start, while senior Brandon Place (Concord, N.H.) took the loss for the Cadets.

Colby-Sawyer jumped out of the gate with four runs in the first four innings before tacking on two more in the top of the sixth. The Cadets had several scoring opportunities but the Chargers' defense kept the baserunners at bay nine times throughout the contest.

Dion had two more hits in the second game and drove in a pair. Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass) added two hits.

Sophomore LaShawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) would to 2-for-4 at the plate with Baker, Sirois and Jameson Gates (La Selva Beach, Calif.) each recorded a hit for the Cadets.
