AUBURNDALE, Fla. – March 15, 2015 – The Colby-Sawyer and UMaine-Farmington baseball teams escaped the cold weather and traveled over 1400 miles to play a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games in Auburndale, Florida on Sunday afternoon. UMF took both ends of the twin bill, 12-5 and 13-2.
The Chargers drop to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the NAC. Colby-Sawyer will play Keene State tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. UMaine-Farmington improves to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Beavers play once more in Florida with a single game against Fredonia St. tomorrow.
GAME 1 – MAINE-FARMINGTON 12, COLBY-SAWYER 5The Beavers raced out to a 4-0 lead in their first at-bat with the big hit coming from Jordan Croteau late in the frame. He hit a bases clearing single up the middle.
The Chargers got a run back in the bottom of the first on a UMF miscue.
UMF added three runs in the top of the second before Colby-Sawyer responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on a RBI single from
Nathan Frongillo and a fielder's choice from
Brendan Thurber.
Jimmie Neal hit a RBI double in the top of the fourth for UMF, but the Chargers got two back on a sacrifice fly from
Joey Fenuccio and a RBI groundout from
Drew Inglesi.
The Beavers scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth and seventh innings en route to the 12-5 victory.
Joe Sullivan went the distance for UMF and gave up two earned runs on five hits.
Mike Bowse took the loss for Colby-Sawyer.
UMF was led by a four hit day from Dustin McCrossin. Ben Keene was 3-for-5 with three RBI and a game-high four runs. Neal also had three hits and three RBI.
Nathan Frongillo went 2-for-4 to lead Colby-Sawyer, while Inglesi scored two runs.
GAME 2 – MAINE-FARMINGTON 13, Colby-Sawyer 2After a pair of scoreless innings to open the game, UMF put a run on the board in the third on a Dustin McCrossin RBI double.
Colby-Sawyer gained the lead in the home half of the third with a pair of runs.
Justin Devoid had a RBI single.
UMF then took control of the game with four runs in the fourth, seven in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Jimmie Neal, McCrossin, Tom Grady, and Sean Cabaniss each had two hits. McCrossin and Ben Keene knocked in three runs apiece.
Kyle Peterson threw a complete game, three-hitter without giving up an earned run.
Chris Hood pitched well in his first collegiate appearance. He tossed 4.2 innings, struck out five and surrendered two earned runs.
