Men's Basketball to Host UMF in NAC Quarterfinals

NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 25, 2014 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team earned the third seed in the upcoming North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament and will host six seed Maine-Farmintgon at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening.

Colby-Sawyer finished the regular season with a 14-10 overall record and a 13-5 mark in the NAC. The Beavers are 11-14 overall and had a 9-9 conference record.

Colby-Sawyer swept the pair of regular season meetings by a combined 11 points. The Chargers earned a 73-68 home win on January 10 and also won 73-67 at UMF on February 1. In Colby-Sawyer's first season with the NAC in 2011-12, the two teams met in the semifinals. The Chargers came away with a 72-62 overtime victory to advance to the title game.

The Chargers have a well balanced attack with four players in double figures led by junior Mike Dias. He is fourth in the league in field goal percentage helping him score 14.5 points per game. He also brings down the fifth most rebounds per game with 7.0. Junior Zach Bean averages 13.0 points, while sophomore Wol Majong scores 12. Koang Thok adds 10.5 points per contest. 

The Beavers feature two impressive players in Andrew Dickey and reigning NAC Player of the Year Ben Johnson. Dickey leads the team with 16.6 points per game and adds 6.7 boards per contest. Johnson scores 16 points per game and ranks second in the conference with 9.5 rebounds per game. Pet Sumner is the third Beaver to average double figures with 11.4 points per game.


Defending champion Husson University secured the top seed in the tournament. The Eagles (23-2 overall, 17-1 NAC) will host eighth-seeded Johnson State College (6-19 overall, 3-15 NAC) in a quarterfinal game on Tuesday.

Castleton State College earned the second seed, finishing the season 18-7 overall, 16-2 NAC. The Spartans will host New England College (8-17 overall, 5-13 NAC) which earned the seventh seed.

Fourth-seeded Lyndon State College (12-13 overall, 12-6 NAC) hosts fifth seed Thomas College (11-14, 11-7 NAC) on Tuesday.

The top eight teams qualify for the NAC Championship. Predetermined tiebreaking procedures were used to seed teams with identical conference winning percentages.

Quarterfinal round games will be played on Tuesday, February 25 at the higher seed. Winners will advance to the semifinals held at the highest remaining seed on Friday, February 28. Semifinal winners will meet Saturday, March 1 at the site of the semifinal.

Game times and dates are subject to change. The NAC Champion receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship.
