Men's Basketball Falls to Husson, 80-70 in NAC Semifinals

FARMINGTON, Maine – Second-seeded Husson University held off a second-half charge from third seed Colby-Sawyer College and posted an 80-70 victory in Friday night's second semifinal of the 2013 North Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament at Dearborn Gym.

BOX SCORE

Husson (19-8) advances to Saturday's 2:00 p.m. championship game against Castleton State College (16-11). The fourth-seeded Spartans punched their ticket to the title game earlier in the evening with a 70-46 victory over the host and no. 1 seed University of Maine at Farmington.

Marc Zaharchuk paced Husson with 22 points, the bulk of that coming off a 12-of-13 effort at the free-throw line. He also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, leading an Eagle squad that outworked the Chargers on the glass, 34 to 29.

Four other Husson players also charted double figures. Wes Murphy drained four 3-pointers toward his tally of 15 points, while Eric Modica and Aaron Willis logged 14 points each. Brooks Spaulding added 10 for the Eagles, to go with his seven rebounds.

Colby-Sawyer (14-13) had three players in double-digits, led by Wol Majong's 24 points. Majong was 5-of-12 from the field, including a 4-of-6 mark from beyond the arc, and was 10-of-11 at the stripe. For his efforts, he was named to the NAC All-Tournament team. Mike Dias charted 14 points and nine rebounds, while Zach Bean finishing with 13 points.

Husson's five-point halftime lead became a 10-point advantage at the 13:50 mark of the second half, on a Phil Leighton jumper. Colby-Sawyer responded with 11 straight points, eventually overtaking the Eagles with 10:35 remaining on a pair of Majong free throws.

A Willis 3-pointer put Husson back on top on the next trip down the floor, and the Eagles led the rest of the way. The Chargers did pull to within one of the Eagles with just under four minutes remaining on a back-to-back 3-pointer and jumper by Majong, but a traditional three-point play by Willis and a Zaharchuk layup got Husson out of danger.
