Three Players Reach 20 Points as Men's Basketball Downs Thomas, 80-57 in NAC Quarterfinals

NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 19, 2013 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team defeated Thomas College, 80-57 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) quarterfinal contest Tuesday evening. The Chargers advance to the semifinals to play Husson who defeated Johnson State.

The NAC uses a final four format for its basketball championships, which means the highest remaining seed after the quarterfinals will host the semifinals and championship on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The Colby-Sawyer vs. Husson game will be played at the University of Maine Farmington on Friday, February 22 at 8:00 pm. The other semifinal matchup at 6:00 pm will feature top seed Maine Farmington and fourth seed Castleton.

Colby-Sawyer had three players reach 20 points led by a career-high 24 from sophomore Zach Bean (Scarborough, Maine). He was 9-13 from the floor and also added a career-high 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Sophomore Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.) recorded his seventh double-double with 22 points and a career best 16 boards. Freshman Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.) added 20 points off the bench. Senior guard Corey Willis (Easton, Mass.) collected nine assists.

Junior Stanley Greene Jr. (Dorchester, Mass.) led Thomas with 22 points on 6-10 shooting. He added a team best six rebounds. Senior Jarrad DeVaughn (Brockton, Mass.) was the only other Terrier to reach double-figures with 12 points.

The Chargers controlled all facets of the game in the first half and led 42-22 at the break. The Terriers were down just nine with five minutes left before Colby-Sawyer finished the frame on a 14-3 run. Bean was 6-8 from the floor and 4-5 from beyond the arc for a first half high of 16 points. Colby-Sawyer outscored the Terriers 20-6 in the paint and shot 50%, while Thomas was just 27.6% from the floor. Greene Jr. led Thomas with eight points in the first frame.

The strong play by the home team continued into the second half as they saw the lead balloon to 27 on multiple occasions. Thomas shot the ball better in the second, but could not cut the deficit to less than 19 throughout the half. Greene Jr. and Dias each scored 14 points to lead their respective teams.

Both teams took care of the ball throughout the game with 10 and nine turnovers, but Colby-Sawyer held a 56-30 advantage on the glass to help lead to 38 points in the paint.
