NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 14, 2013 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team defeated the Eagles of Green Mountain, 69-56, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action Thursday evening. Prior to the game, seniors
Paul Holland (England, UK) and
Corey Willis (Easton, Mass.) were honored.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 12-5 in the NAC and pulls even overall at 12-12. Green Mountain drops to 4-19 overall and 3-14 in the conference.
The Chargers received 15 points from sophomore
Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.) and freshman
Jake Maynard (Shelburne, Vt.). Freshmen
Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.) and
Peter Donato (Portland, Maine) added nine points apiece. Majong also grabbed a career and game-high nine rebounds. Willis and Holland each scored eight points.
Sophomore Terry Jones (Pearl, Miss.) led the Eagles with 15 points on 6-10 shooting. Sophomore Elijah Wiggins (Pawtucket, R.I.) and sophomore Chris Strong (Fort Worth, Texas) also reached double-figures with 11 points apiece.
Holland opened the game by scoring the first eight points for Colby-Sawyer as the home team jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half shooting below 35%. The Chargers held a 27-21 lead at the break after knocking down four three-pointers on nine attempts. Colby-Sawyer's Holland and Green Mountain's Wiggins each had eight first half points.
Green Mountain made a run early in the second half with hot shooting from the floor. After a layup by Green to knot the score at 39-39 at the 11:25 mark, Colby-Sawyer retook the lead on a Majong jumper and never relinquished the advantage for the remainder of the game. The Eagles shot 56% in the second half, but were outrebounded 26-13 leading to 10 second chance points for the Chargers.
Colby-Sawyer held a 42-32 edge on the glass and a 29-2 margin in bench scoring.
Colby-Sawyer travels to Castleton on Saturday for a 1:00 pm tip in the regular season finale for both teams. Green Mountain will host New England College also on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
