CASTINE, Maine - February 10, 2013 - Colby-Sawyer scored four unanswered points, in the final minute of overtime, to escape Smith Gymnasium with a 74-69 in a North Atlantic Conference women's basketball game.
The Chargers remained unbeaten in the conference at 16-0, 19-4 overall while the Mariners fell to 8-7, 11-11.
Mary Badeen and Bekah Campbell each scored 15 points to pace MMA while Courtney Dufour and Leah Jackson added nine. Jackson pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds and Campbell grabbed 12 boards.
Taylor DeSanty netted a game-high 27 for Colby-Sawyer,
Sammi Lehr 15 and Callin Bullett 12.
Kelsey Cahill and
Ashley Fruzzetti each added nine.
Fruzzetti and Badeen opened overtime trading threes before a free throw by Hanna Lyons put the Mariners up 65-64 with 3:55 left. Casey Everest made it 67-64 with a layup until Lehr converted a traditional three-point play to tie the game for the tenth, and final, time 67-67 with 2:30 remaining. Fruzzetti's three at 2:03 gave the Chargers the lead for good, 70-67.
The second half featured five ties and five lead changes and was tied at 55-55 with 3:42 remaining. Colby-Sawyer took a 61-58 lead on DeSanty's layup with 37 seconds left. Campbell made 61-60 with a layup with 25 seconds left and hit the front end of two free throws with six seconds left to send the game into overtime tied, 61-61.
Even at 10-10, after Devyn Curless-Clark drained a three for Maine Maritime, Colby-Sawyer went on an 11-4 scoring run to lead 21-14 with 7:32 remaining in the opening half. Fruzzetti connected from behind the arc, Cahill converted two free throws, Cailin Bullit hit a layup and DeSanty netted four straight in the run for the Chargers.
The Mariners answered with a 13-6 scoring run to even the game for the third time, 27-27, with 3:59 left. Badeen scored six in the run, Dufour three and Everest and Jackson two each for Maine Maritime. The Mariners took a 37-30 lead two minutes later after a jumper by Jillian Perron and a three by Dufour before
Sammi Lehr's layup made it 37-32 at the break.
The Chargers host Green Mountain on Thursday at 7:30 pm.
