Men's Basketball Sails Past Maine Maritime 71-46

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 4, 2013 – Colby-Sawyer College used 42 points in the paint to defeat Maine Maritime 71-46 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men's basketball action on Friday evening.  

Colby-Sawyer improves to 3-7 overall and 3-2 in NAC play, while Maine Maritime falls to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

Maine Maritime began the game with a 10-3 run capped by a three-pointer from sophomore Jason Hatch (Islesboro, Maine). The Chargers rattled off the next seven points to knot the game at 10-10. A layup by Colby-Sawyer's Peter Donato (Portland, Maine) and a pair of free throws by Hatch tied the game at 12-12. Another Donato bucket gave Colby-Sawyer a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Colby-Sawyer's largest advantage of the first half was 14 points, after a 6-0 run was capped by sophomore Koang Thok's (Portland, Maine) fast break lay-up that put the home team up 32-18. Senior Paul Campbell (Camden, Maine) hit a trey for the Mariners, but they trailed 32-21 at the half.

The Mariners cut the deficit to six points on a Caleb MacDonald (Swan's Island, Maine) jumper four minutes into the second frame, but that was as close as the visitors would get. Colby-Sawyer slowly pulled away and led by double-digits for the last 14 minutes of the game.

Sophomore Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.) led the Chargers with a game-high 15 points and nine rebounds. Donato added six points and pulled down a career best 13 caroms. Junior Stephen Thorpe (Chicago, Ill.) had 10 points and a game best five steals in 19 minutes. Freshman Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.) added nine points off the bench. Sophomore Zach Bean (Scarborough, Maine) chipped in eight points and six rebounds.

Campbell was the only Mariner to reach double-figures with 10 points. He added five assists and five rebounds. Sophomore Tyler Chiasson (Dixfield, Maine) contributed seven points and seven rebounds. Hatch scored eight points in 26 minutes off the bench.

The Chargers, who forced 28 turnovers, held significant advantages in points in the paint (42-18), second chance points (24-4) fast break points (14-0) and bench points (31-14).

Colby-Sawyer hosts Husson tomorrow at 3:00 pm, while the Mariners also play tomorrow at 3:00 pm at New England College.
