Women's Basketball Uses Strong Second Half to Beat NEC 68-52

HENNIKER, N.H. – January 19, 2013 - Colby-Sawyer women's basketball would outscore New England College 37-22 in the second half leading the Chargers past the Pilgrims 68-52 Saturday afternoon.

With the win the Chargers improve to 12-4 overall and remain undefeated in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play improving to 9-0.  The loss drops the Pilgrims to 12-4 on the season and 7-2 in NAC play.

The Pilgrims would jump out to an early 7-0 lead but the Chargers would respond with a 9-1 run trailing just 9-8 five minutes into the opening half.  Colby-Sawyer would continue to bring the offense building their largest lead of the game up 25-15 with 6:27 remaining.  NEC would regain the lead up 28-27 thanks to a Kayla Lawlor (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) layup and foul shot but Colby-Sawyer would get back-to-back buckets from Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) to head into halftime up 31-30.

The Chargers would come out of halftime on fire building a 16 point lead up 51-35 with just over 12 minutes remaining in regulation. The Pilgrims would get within 13 but that is as close as the Chargers would let them get as Colby-Sawyer finished the second half shooting 55% from the field en route to the 68-52 victory.

Colby-Sawyer's Taylor DeSanty led all scorers finishing with 21 points to go along with six rebounds.  Colby-Sawyer's Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) finished with 13 points and a game-high six assists, while Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) was the only other Charger in double-figures with 10 points on the afternoon. Freshman Jessica Shenkel (Sharon, Mass.) poured in nine points on 3-5 shooting from beyond the arc. 

Leading the way for NEC was Markey Flewelling (Portsmouth, N.H.) who finished with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.  NEC's Katarina Muska (Brimfield, Mass.) and Shauntaye Pumphret (Bristol, N.H.) each chipped in 10 points for the Pilgrims.

NEC returns to action Thursday, Jan. 24 when they host NAC opponent Johnson State College.  Colby-Sawyer will hit the court on Thursday, Jan. 24 when they host NAC for Lyndon State College.
