The first half was tightly contested throughout, as the two teams went back-and-forth through six ties and four lead changes over the opening 17 minutes of play, with neither team opening up better than a four-point cushion.
The Spartans were able to open things up over the final 2:36 however, going on a 13-3 run to close out the half leading 53-40. Hughes had five points during the surge, including one of his six triples.
Castleton opened the second half red hot, and extended the lead 65-42 by the 16:45 mark on a Comstock lay-up. Comstock accounted for six points during the 12-2 spurt, while Hughes canned yet another three and Doug Krouse (Reading, Pa.) got in on the act with a three-pointer of his own.
The lead hung between 20 and 24 over the next six minutes until a 6-2 Charger run, including a three-ball from Bardaglio cut the deficit to 79-62. It was as close as they would come however as Chad Pulver (Bennington, Vt.) quickly answered with a three to push the lead back to 20.
The loss snaps a seven game win streak for the Chargers as they finish the season at 20-8.
Castleton improves to 19-9, and will advance to the NCAA National Tournament against an opponent to be determined.
