Men's Basketball Cruises Past Green Mountain, 81-61

Box Score

POULTNEY, Vt. - February, 16, 2012 - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team used a 40-17 first half cushion to defeat Green Mountain, 81-61 on Thursday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at the Eagle Dome.

With the victory, the Chargers' overall record improves to 17-7, while their NAC record goes 14-3.  The loss sends the Eagles' overall record to 4-19, while the team's NAC record moves to 3-14.

The visitors charged out to an 11-1 lead through the first six and a half minutes of play before Green Mountain was able to gather any momentum on the offensive side of the ball.  By the midway point of the first half, the Eagles had closed within six and 12-6, but a 14-0 run to close the half by the Chargers effectively put the game out of reach.

During the second half, the Chargers had control of the game and extended their lead to as many as 31 points.  A handful of late three pointers by freshmen Jack Hepburn (Miller Place, NY) and Jeremiah Aponte (Copiague, NY) brought the Eagles closer, but in the end the home side just didn't have enough firepower to overcome the early deficit.

In a battle of the NAC's top freshman, Koang Thok (Portland, ME) and Carnelius Green (Oviedo, FL) showed why both should be considered to have very bright futures with their play during the game.  Thok had 16 points in the game thanks to a 5-for-7 performance from the field while also adding five rebounds.  Green led the Eagles offense with a double-double of a game-high 22 points and 10 boards, while also adding four assists.
Freshman forward Mike Dias (Carver, MA) was a force in the paint for the Chargers pouring in 20 points and grabbing eight caroms.  Freshman forward Kyle Nelson (Milford, NH) also chipped in with 14 points in the win.

The Eagles received solid nights from Hepburn and Aponte as Hepburn scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc while Aponte had 12 points and six rebounds in the loss.

The Eagles will be on the road as they finish up the 2011-2012 regular season slate on Saturday, February 18th against New England College.  The Chargers will return home to host top-ranked Castleton State College as both teams play in their regular season finale on Saturday.  Game time for both games is set for 3 p.m.
