NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 21, 2012 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team outscored New England College 46-29 in the second half to earn a 78-68 victory in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Saturday afternoon at the Hogan Sports Center.
The Chargers improve to 9-6 overall and 7-2 in NAC play. New England College dips to 4-12 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
Freshman
Koang Thok (Portland, Maine) led Colby-Sawyer with 19 points and a game best eight rebounds. Senior
James Tobin (Brookline, N.H.) added 14 points, six rebounds, four steals and a pair of blocks. Freshman
Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.) went 5-5 in the second half where he scored all 10 of his points.
New England College's junior Abdi Mohamed (Biddeford, Maine) led all players with 22 points on 8-14 shooting. He also chipped in five rebounds, four assists and a game-high five steals before fouling out. Jonathan Byrnes (Bethel, Conn.) was the only other Pilgrim to reach double-figures with 13 points.
The Pilgrims controlled the pace of the first half as their defense held Colby-Sawyer to 2-12 from beyond the arc. The Chargers entered the game fifth in the nation with 10.6 made three-pointers per game. Colby-Sawyer shot just 34.3% from the floor, while the Pilgrims scored 22 of their 39 points in the paint. Mohamed led all players with 14 points in the frame.
Colby-Sawyer trailed by as much as nine in the early seconds of the second half, but gained the lead five minutes into the frame on a pair of Dias layups and five three pointers over that stretch. The game was tied at 67-67 with 4:35 on the clock when the Chargers held the visitors without a field goal for the remainder of the contest, resulting in an 11-1 run to end the game.
New England College held a 39-34 edge on the glass, which resulted in a 38-30 advantage in the paint.
Colby-Sawyer steps outside of NAC play on Tuesday with a 7:00 pm home game against Framingham. New England College travels to Johnson State on Thursday for a 7:30pm tip.
