WENHAM, MA. - February 8, 2011 - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team fell at Gordon, the defending conference champion, 70-58 at the Bennett Center on Tuesday.
The win moves Gordon to 5-5 in TCCC action and 9-12 overall. Colby-Sawyer dropps to 10-11 and is 6-4 in league play.
The Scots shot a sizzling 54% from the field and and even better 64% from 3-point range. They were led by Greg Walker's (Uxbridge, MA) game high 23 points. Junior guard Garrett Harden (Worcester, MA) made five of seven shots from downtown for a career high 17 points.
Colby-Sawyer started out strong and took a 12-8 lead five minutes into the game. Gordon fought back with 3-pointers from Austin Bentson (Branchville, N.J.) and Luke Hamilton (Mount Airy, NC) to pull within one at 20-19. Gordon took a lead at 9:05 of the first half on a basket from Walker and were able to hang on to the advantage for the remainder of the game. Over the next eight minutes, the Scots limited the Chargers to just five points, going on a 13-5 run to take a 36-27 advantage after another trey from Harden. Colby-Sawyer cut the lead to five, going into the break down 37-32 after a long three-pointer from
Corey Willis (Easton, MA).
The Chargers cranked up the defensive pressure in the early going of the second half, forcing a flurry of Gordon turnovers and cutting the deficit all the way to 42-41 at the 12:10 mark. Colby-Sawyer allowed only five points over the first 7:50 of the second half. The Scots righted the ship with a three-pointer off the right wing from freshman Shaun Roach (Weymouth, MA). After a Charger turnover, David Dempsey (Wallingford, CT) got inside for a layup, extending Gordon's lead to 47-41.
Colby-Sawyer made another small run near the eight minute mark with a dunk by
John Roberts (Casco, ME) and a 3-pointer from
James Tobin (Brookline, N.H). The latter cut the Scots' lead to 53-48, but the Chargers were unable to get closer the rest of the way. Bentson's 3-pointer with 4:15 left put the Gordon lead into double digits and Gordon stretched their advantage as high as 16 down the stretch.
JT Himmelstein (Glendale, AZ) came off the bench to put up a career high nine assists, while committing just one turnover. Dempsey led all players with 11 rebounds.
John Roberts had a strong performance for Colby-Sawyer, posting a team-high 12 points and nine rebounds, while
Robbie Burke (Cheshire, MA) joined him in double figures with ten.
Gordon will play their final non-conference game of the regular season when they meet Tufts, Thursday, February at 7:30P.M. Colby-Sawyer will look to get back on track on Saturday, February 12, when they host University of New England at 3P.M.
