HENNIKER, N.H. – January 11, 2011 - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team would grab the lead with four minutes remaining in regulation and never relinquish it beating the New England College Pilgrims 66-59 Tuesday evening in Henniker.
With the win the Chargers remain undefeated in conference play improving to 2-0 and move to 6-7 overall. The loss evens the Pilgrims' conference record at 1-1 and drops them to 11-2 overall.
The two teams would battle through the opening half evenly which would see three ties and seven lead changes. The Chargers would gain the lead late in the half thanks to a layup by
Robbie Burke (Cheshire, Mass.) and a jumper by
Will Bardaglio (Wayne, Maine) giving Colby-Sawyer the 30-28 halftime lead.
NEC would grab the lead early in the second half and would extend their lead to 45-35 just five minutes in. The Chargers would chip away at the lead trailing just 53-50 with 5:45 on the clock. The Chargers would then get back-to-back three-pointers from Bardaglio and a three-pointer from
Corey Willis (Easton, Mass.) grabbing their first lead of the second up 62-55 with 1:53 remaining in regulation.
NEC would get with four late but Colby-Sawyer would close out the final minute 3-for-4 from the foul line solidifying the 66-59 victory.
Leading the way for Colby-Sawyer was
Will Bardaglio (Wayne, Maine) who led all scorers finishing with 23 points. Colby-Sawyer's
Robbie Burke (Cheshire, Mass.) finished with 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while
John Roberts (Casco, Maine) led the Chargers with eight boards.
Stephen Thorpe (Chicago, Ill.) dished out a game-high eight assists and chipped in six points.
Leading the way for NEC was Joe Faragher (North Ridgeville, Ohio) who finished with 14 points. ENC's Shane Hennessey (Plymouth, England) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with seven points and Troy Prather (Claremont, Calif.) finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
NEC returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 15 when they host conference opponent Nichols College. Colby-Sawyer will also take the court on Saturday hosting conference foe Anna Maria College.
