BEVERLY, Mass. - February 3, 2010 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell to the Gulls of Endicott, 72-39 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Wednesday evening.
The loss drops the Chargers to 7-13 overall and 4-4 in the conference. Endicott remains atop the TCCC standings with a 7-1 record and an overall record of 14-5.
Kaylin Burke (Leominster, Mass.) netted a career-high 21 points and added a team-leading seven rebounds to lead the Gulls to their sixth straight victory.
Colby-Sawyer grabbed its only lead of the game, 4-2, on a jumper by
Sammi Lehr (Cohasset, Mass.) before Endicott went on a 13-3 run to grab a 15-5 lead with just under 11 minutes to play in the opening half. The Gulls' defense forced 16 first half turnovers en route to a 37-12 lead heading into the break as a layup by Kate Kovach (Moon Township, Pa.) with :08 seconds remaining gave the Gulls its largest lead of the half.
Burke led all scorers heading into the intermission with 15 points as she connected on 4-of-4 shots from beyond the arc. Ashley Wright (Merrimack, N.H.) connected on a trio of treys as well, chipping in with nine points. Colby-Sawyer's
Terri Duffy (Marshfield, Mass.) led the Chargers at the break with five points and eight rebounds.
CSC came out of the half with a new sense of urgency as Colby-Sawyer matched its first half scoring output with 13:41 remaining on a jumper by
Ashley Brewer (Moodus, Conn.). However, the Gulls were too much down the stretch as Burke knocked down another triple to push the lead to 53-30 and started a 19-9 run that helped the Gulls secure their seventh conference win of the season, 72-39.
Endicott shot an efficient 48.1% (25-of-52) from the field while winning the battle in rebounds (39-38) and forcing 25 Colby-Sawyer missteps. The Chargers mustered only a 25% (14-of-56) field goal percentage while giving up 23 points off turnovers.
Kaylin Burke led all scorers with her career-high 21 points while sharing the team lead in rebounds (7) with Ashley Vitale (Wilmington, Mass.). Ceciley Chisholm (Lexington, Mass.) and Kate Kovach each joined Burke in double-figures with 12 points and 10 points each, respectively. Terri Duffy while
Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) came off the bench to chip in with six points.
Colby-Sawyer will host Salve Regina at 1:00 pm on Saturday. Prior to the start of the game at 11:00 am, the team will host its annual alumni game.
