NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 20, 2010 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team won their fifth straight game by defeating Western New England, 66-55 on senior day in The Commonwealth Coast Conference regular season finale. The Chargers earn the fifth seed in next week's TCCC tournament and will travel to the fourth seeded Salve Regina Seahawks, on Tuesday. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
The win improves the Chargers' record to 12-13 overall and 9-4 in TCCC action. The Golden Bears had their three game win streak snapped and fell to 15-9 overall and 7-6 in the conference.
The first half featured eight tied scores and two lead changes. Western New England freshman Emily Savino (Ellington, Conn.) scored 21 of the team's 32 first half points on 7-8 shooting, including 3-3 from beyond the arc. The Chargers received eight points from freshman
Taylor DeSanty and six from junior
Katelyn Stravinsky to stay within four points at the half (32-28).
After the teams traded buckets for the first five minutes of the second frame, the Chargers took over offensively and went on a 13-3 run to take a three point lead with 9:35 remaining. The Colby-Sawyer defense dug in and did the dirty work, holding Western New England to four field goals for the remainder of the game. Colby-Sawyer's hot second half shooting led to a 15 point advantage in the frame to lift the team to the 66-55 win over Golden Bears. The Chargers knocked down 5-8 from beyond the arc in the second and were 9-19 for the game.
Savino tallied a career-high 31 points on 11-15 shooting for the visitors. Senior Kailah Al-Darraji (Dover, N.H.) chipped in 12 points.
DeSanty led the Chargers with a career-high 22 points on 8-18 shooting and added six rebounds. Senior
Amy Hebert had a memorable senior day as she moved into a tie for 10th place on the Colby-Sawyer all-time three-pointers made list. She finished with 11 points, six rebounds and three treys. Senior
Terri Duffy recorded her 16th double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
