BIDDEFORD, Maine - February 13, 2010 - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team defeated UNE, the defending TCCC champions, 74-72 on a last second three-pointer by freshman
Corey Willis, in an important The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest on Saturday afternoon.
Willis' three-pointer from the top of the key capped a Charger rally that saw them recover from a seven-point deficit with 1:03 to play.
The Nor'easters had a chance to win or tie on their final possession, but a desperation halfcourt heave was wide of the mark.
After a pair of foul shots by sophomore Ryan Knotek gave UNE a 72-65 advantage with just over a minute to play, Colby-Sawyer sophomore
Will Bardaglio drilled a three on the Chargers' next possession.
The visitors would then take advantage of a pair of UNE missed free throws as Bardaglio canned another from long range to cut the deficit to one (72-71) with 26 ticks remaining.
Colby-Sawyer fouled UNE immediately, and once again the Nor'easters came up empty on a pair of attempts at the stripe to set up the game-winning bucket by Willis.
Charger first-year forward
Jason Chevrefils led all scorers with 23 points, thanks in part to a 7-for-8 performance at the line. Sophomore guard
Zach McBey came off the bench to tally 12 points and Bardaglio finished with 11 points.
Sophomore guard Anthony Johnson scored a team-high 21 points for the Nor'easters. He made three shots from beyond the arc. Junior guard Kadare Brown and sophomore guard Marcus Winn combined for six treys and added 14 points apiece.
Colby-Sawyer shot 83.3 percent (15 of 18) from the line for the game, compared to 55.0 percent (11 of 20) for UNE.
The hosts got off to a blazing start, outscoring the Chargers 27-11 over the opening 10 minutes. Colby-Sawyer closed the frame on an 8-0 run to close within one (33-32) at intermission.
The second half would feature seven lead changes.
Colby-Sawyer took its first win over UNE in the last six meetings between the two squads to improve to 13-10 overall, 6-5 in conference play. The Nor'easters now stand at 11-11 overall, 7-4 in TCCC games.
Both teams return to action Wednesday. The Chargers host Wentworth Institute of Technology at 7:30 p.m., while the Nor'easters head to Gordon College for an 8 p.m. tip-off.
