MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - January 7, 2010 - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team upset the No. 7 ranked team in the nation on Thursday night, earning an 86-76 victory at Middlebury. The Chargers improve to 7-5 overall, while the Panthers suffer their first loss of the season falling to 10-1.
Middlebury made just 5 of 27 (.185) three-point attempts on the night, while connecting on 13 of 27 (.481) free throws. Colby-Sawyer was an impressive 9 of 17 (.529) from behind the arc, while connecting on 27 of 37 (.729) from the charity stripe. Fifty fouls were whistled in the contest, as Middlebury held a slight 47-43 edge on the boards.
Colby-Sawyer led 13-8 early, before Middlebury went on a 12-0 run at the 11:40 mark to take a 20-13 lead with 9:33 remaining in the half. Luis Alvarez hit a three and a pair of free throws during the stretch, before Ryan Wholey gave the Panthers their biggest lead of the half at 23-15 minutes later. The Chargers battled back, taking a two-point lead on a three from
James Tobin late in the half, before Andrew Locke hit a lay-up to send the Panthers into the locker room in a 33-33 tie.
Colby-Sawyer opened the second half with a pair of threes from
Jon Chaloux and one from
Will Bardaglio to take a 44-35 lead at the 16:24 mark. Middlebury answered with a 6-0 spurt, sparked by a dunk and a hoop from Jamal Davis. The Chargers then went on a pivotal 17-2 run over the game's next five minute to take a 61-43 advantage. Chaloux converted a dunk, knocked down a three and hit four free throws during the key run.
Middlebury chipped away, cutting the deficit to 68-58 on a bucket from Davis with 5:12 left to play. The Panthers gained some momentum down the stretch, but the Chargers answered each time, as
Corey Willis (9 of 10 free throws, 13 points) was big down the stretch, keeping the ball from Panther defenders. Following Davis' bucket, Colby-Sawyer converted 16 of 20 free throws in the game's final 4:52 to come away with the win.
Nolan Thompson led Middlebury with 17 points, Locke scored 14, while Davis netted 13 with eight boards. Tim Edwards added 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds on the night to go along with five assists and three steals.
Chaloux scored a game-high 25 for Colby-Sawyer,
James Tobin netted a career-high 17 and pulled down a career-high 13 boards, while Bardaglio scored 15.
