NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 18, 2009 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team celebrated its Senior Night with a 51-41 victory over Wentworth, Wednesday evening. Junior Terri Duffy (Marshfield, Mass.) recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 21 points and 14 rebounds. The Chargers improve to 15-8 overall and 9-3 in the conference, while the Leopards drop to 5-19 and 3-9 in TCCC action.
Wentworth jumped out to an early 11-5 lead, but the Chargers went on a 14-2 scoring run to jump ahead of the Leopards, 19-13. Leopards' sophomore Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y) kept her squad within striking distance, as she scored nine points, including a layup, which cut the Chargers' lead to one. A last second layup by Kate Callahan (Bridgton, Mass) improved Colby-Sawyer's lead to 23-20, heading into the locker rooms at halftime. Duffy led the team with nine points and seven rebounds in the half.
At the start of the second stanza, the Chargers increased their halftime lead to six, at 30-24, after Duffy and senior Emma Pasquale (Eliot, Maine) both made two baskets each. However, Wentworth again went on a run, tying the score at 32-32, with a three-pointer by junior Jessie Coffey (Wakefield, R.I).
With the score all square at 36 apiece, Duffy completed a three-point play to give the Chargers the lead for good. Her play seemed to swing the momentum in the Chargers favor, as they went on a 15-5 run to close out the contest.
In her last regular season home game, Pasquale scored 14 points, grabbed four rebounds and swatted two shots. Senior Ellen Naughton (Reading, Mass.) scored seven points and collected four rebounds of her own. Callahan went on to finish with four points and a season-high nine rebounds.
Wentworth was led by Margo Ward (Mystic, Conn.), who tallied 15 points and Vallone who finished with 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.
