Chargers Drop Road Contest to Mariners, 79-67

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers jumped out to an early 12-1 lead, with graduate student Bryson Jenkins (Gary, Ind.) hitting back-to-back three-pointers to start the game. The Mariners quickly answered with six straight points, cutting the lead to 12-6. Junior AJ Mutiganzi (Burlington, Ontario) then scored a layup to extend the Chargers' lead back to 14-6 with 14:26 remaining in the half. The teams traded baskets throughout the half, with senior Nick Grant (Houston, Texas) knocking down a three-pointer to give the Chargers a 23-21 lead. First-year Brady Rogers (Newfields, N.H.) added a free throw to push the lead to three, but the Mariners closed out the half with a 21-7 run, taking a 42-31 lead into halftime. 
  • Senior Chaz Cullum (Omaha, Neb.) opened the scoring int he second half with back-to-back layups, followed by a layup from first-year Elijah Thomas (Fairfax, Virginia) to trim the Mariners' lead to five points with 18:26 remaining. The teams exchanged baskets throughout the half, but the Mariners hit key shots to push their lead to 62-46 with 10:09 left in the half. Jenkins responded with a three-pointer to cut the lead, but the Mariners continued to score, increasing their lead to double digits. Sophomore Sean Peterson (Chester, N.H.) and Cullum each added a layup, narrowing the gap to 70-63. A late layup by Grant brought the Chargers withing five points with 1:52 remaining, but the Mariners capitalized on Charger fouls to seal the 79-67 win. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Jenkins paced the Chargers with 16 points (6-13 FG, 4-9 3PT) and four rebounds while Cullum added 14 points (7-17 FG), six rebounds, and five assists. Grant tallied 12 points (5-8 FG, 1-1 3 PT, 1-2 FT) and one assist.
  • Jaylyn Clardy led the way for the Mariners with 24 points (9-19 FG, 1-5 3PT, 5-5 FT), three rebounds, and two assists while Eddie Volkerts recorded 12 points (4-11 FG, 4-5 FT), 10 rebounds, and five assists. Wilton Causey chipped in 11 points (5-11 FG, 1-2 FT) and six rebounds for the Mariners. 
  • The Chargers shot 45.9% from the field and recorded 44 points in the paint. The Mariners shot 40.5% from the field and recorded 26 points from the bench.
