Chargers Shine in Road Victory

PAXTON, MASSACHUSETTS - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team picked up their second conference win, defeating Anna Maria College 80-67. 

Rapid Recap:
  • Junior A.J. Mutiganzi (Burlington, Ontario) opened the scoring Saturday afternoon with a layup followed by graduate student Bryson Jenkins (Gary, Ind.) hitting back-to-back three-pointer to give the Chargers an early 8-2 lead. The teams exchanged baskets throughout the first half, but the Amcats would trim the Chargers lead to 16-14 with 14:41 remaining in the half. Jenkins responded with another three-pointer sparking a 20-4 run for the Chargers. First-year Brady Rogers (Newfields, N.H.) added a three-pointer to push the Chargers' lead to 39-27 with 3:24 left to play in the first half. The Chargers continued their strong shooting, heading into halftime with a 43-27 lead over Anna Maria. 
  • The Amcats opened the second half with a three-pointer, but the Chargers quickly responded with Mutiganzi scoring two layups, followed by a three-pointer from first-year Andrew Blunt (Alexandria, Virginia) to extend the Chargers lead to 50-34 with 15:44 left in the half. The Amcats kept battling, hitting shots to narrow the gap as they trailed the Chargers 62-57 with 9:42 remaining. Rogers sank back-to-back three-pointers to push the Chargers lead, but the Amcats answered with a basket to keep the Chargers lead to single digits as they trailed 68-61. Mutiganzi made another layup, sparking a 12-3 run for the Chargers as they would pull away and secure the 80-67 win. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Jenkins paced the Chargers with 28 points (9-20 FG, 6-13 3PT, 4-4 FT), seven rebounds, and two steals while Rogers recorded 15 points (4-8 FG, 4-8 3PT, 3-3 FT) and five rebounds. Blunt added 14 points (5-7 FG, 4-6 3PT) and one assist for the Chargers. 
  • Ray Carter led the way for the Amcats with 19 points (8-18 FG, 2-7 3PT, 1-3 FT), five rebounds, and three assists while Gabriel Armstead chipped in 15 points (6-13 FG, 1-5 3PT, 2-4 FT, eight rebounds, and three assists. 
  • The Chargers shot 45.8% from the field and 85.7% from the free throw while the Amcats shot 40.6% from the field and 46.7% from the free throw.

"It's always hard to go to another school and win on the road," said first-year Brady Rogers (Newfields, N.H.). "I liked how we came in with lots of energy and that helped us play one of our better defensive games and knock down some three's. We stuck together as a team and played a full 40 minutes which helped us secure a much needed win."

The Chargers will travel to Nashua, N.H. on Wednesday to take on inner-state rival Rivier University with a 7:00 PM tip-off.
