Late Rally Pushes Mount Holyoke Past Chargers

SOUTH HADLEY, MASS. - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team dropped their non-conference matchup Thursday afternoon to Mount Holyoke College 66-59. 

Rapid Recap:
  • Sophomore Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) would knock down the first seven points for the Chargers in the opening quarter Thursday afternoon to give the visitors a 7-2 lead over the Lyons with 8:35 left in the quarter. The Lyons would continue to battle and cut the Chargers' lead to one point and then went on a 7-2 to take a 16-13 lead over the visitors. Junior Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) would make a pair of free throws in the final minute of the opening quarter to give the visitors a 25-24 lead. 
  • Mitchell would make a layup to open the scoring in the second quarter for the Chargers and give the visitors an early three-point lead. The teams would continue to battle, but neither team was able to knock down a shot late in the second quarter. Mitchell would make a layup to extend the visitors lead and spark a 10-0 run with senior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) and first-year Lauren MacDonald (Tilton, N.H.) each hitting a three-pointer to give the Chargers a double-digit lead with 2:23 left in the quarter. The Lyons would respond and add a quick five points to cut the Chargers lead to six points, but first-year Emma Greenan (Saint Johnsbury, Vt.) would made a layup in the final minute as the Chargers would take a 39-31 lead heading into halftime. 
  • Chick would start the second half making a layup to give the Chargers a 10-point lead. The Lyons continued to cut the Chargers lead and went on a 7-0 to trail the visitors by three points. Junior Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) would knock down a three-pointer to disrupt the Lyons run, but the Lyons would knock down back-to-back shots to trail the Chargers 44-43 with 3:34 left in the quarter. The Lyons would hit a pair of free throws to tie the quarter at 45-45, followed by an 8-2 run to end the quarter. The home team's run would give them the 53-48 lead over the Chargers. 
  • Holt would start the final quarter by making a layup to cut the Lyons lead to three points, but the Lyons continued to knock down shots and extend their lead to five points. MacDonald would hit another three-pointer late in the quarter followed by Mitchell making a pair of free throws to cut the Lyons lead to three points with less than a minute in the final quarter. The Lyons would take advantage of late fouls by the Chargers to come away with the 66-59 win. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Mitchell recorded 15 points (4-7 FG, 1-1 3 PT, 6-8 FT), eight rebounds, and five assists while Chick added 12 points (5-9 FG, 1-2 3 PT, 1-2 FT) and five rebounds. Holt tallied nine points (2-4 FG, 1-1 3 PT, 4-6 FT) and three assists for the Chargers. 
  • Alex Twomey paced the Lyons with15 points (4-12 FG, 1-2 3 PT, 6-8 FT), five rebounds, and four assists while Sofia Francisco added 13 points (5-11 FG, 3-3 FT) and seven rebounds and Ania McMichael chipped in 12 points (4-6 FG, 2-4 3 PT, 2-2 FT) and 11 assists. 
  • The Lyons shot 70% from the free throw line and recorded 32 points in the paint. The Chargers shot 46.7% from beyond the arc and 63.6% from the free throw line.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday when they host reigning GNAC champion Saint Joseph's College of Maine with a 1:00 PM start.
