NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team gave the reigning Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) champions a run for their money on Saturday, but dropped the contest, 62-49.
Rapid Recap:
- The visiting Monks started the first quarter by going on a quick 5-0 run, but sophomore Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) would open the scoring for the Chargers by knocking down a three-pointer. The Chargers and Monks would continue to battle in the opening quarter, with first-year Emma Greenan (Saint Johnsbury, Vt.) cutting the Monks lead to five points, followed by a three-pointer from senior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) as the Chargers trailed 15-11.
- The Monks would score first in the second quarter to extend their lead to eight points, but first-year Hayden Wilkins (North Concord, Vt.) would make a layup to cut the lead to six points with 8:41 left in the quarter. The Monks responded to the made basket and went on an 11-2 run late in the second quarter to extend their lead to 15 points. First-year Sierra Derby (Richford, Vt.) would make a free throw and sparked a 6-0 run to end out the quarter with the Chargers trailing 30-21.Â
- Junior Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) would make a layup to give the Chargers a quick 6-2 run to start off the third quarter. First-year Lauren MacDonald (Tilton, N.H.) would knock down a three-pointer with 6:22 left in the quarter as the home team trailed the visitors 36-30. The Monks would continue to battle and increase their lead to 14 points, but back-to-back layups by Chick would cut that lead to 11 points as the third quarter would come to a close with the Monks leading 45-34.Â
- Junior Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) would open the scoring in the final quarter of action by nailing a three-pointer to cut the Monks lead to single digits. The Monks would make a layup to give the visitors a double-digit lead, but Chick would nail another three-pointer to give the Chargers 6-1 run to cut the Monks lead to four points with 6:39 left in the final quarter. The teams would continue to trade buckets late in the quarter, but the Monks would pull away from the Chargers in the final two minutes to take the 62-49 win.Â

- Chick paced the Chargers with 12 points (5-11 FG, 2-3 3 PT), six rebounds, and four assists while Holt added 11 points (4-13 FG, 2-4 3 PT, 1-2 FT), three rebounds, and three steals. Grillone tallied seven points (3-7 FG, 1-5 3 PT), one rebound, and one steal for the Chargers.Â
- Grace Ramsdell led the way for the Monks with 16 points (7-17 FG, 1-6 3 PT, 1-1 FT), seven rebounds, and three assists while Elisabeth Stapelfeld added 10 points (4-9 FG, 2-4 3 PT), three rebounds, and three steals. Angelica Hurley rounded out the scoring for the Monks with nine points (3-10 FG, 2-6 3 PT, 1-2 FT), seven rebounds, and six assists.Â
- The Monks shot 54.5% from the charity stripe and held a 21-10 points off turnovers margin in their win. The Chargers shot 62.5% from the charity stripe and recorded 20 points in the paint.Â
