Chargers Tripped Up By Lasers in GNAC Play

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team dropped their second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game Tuesday night to Lasell University 61-40. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • Junior Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) would get the Chargers on the board first in the opening quarter by making a layup followed by another made layup by senior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) to give the home team a quick 4-0 start. The visiting Lasers would respond to the Chargers early baskets and go on a 11-2 run with sophomore Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) adding a quick jumper to interrupt the run as the first quarter would come to an end with the Lasers taking a 13-8 lead. 
  • The Lasers would start the second quarter by going on a 11-4 run with first-year Hayden Wilkins (North Concord, Vt.) scoring a quick four points for the Chargers with 6:28 left in the second quarter. The Lasers responded to Wilkins buckets by going on an 8-0, with Grillone knocking down a three-pointer to end the scoring drought for the Chargers. The Lasers would continue to control on the offensive end as the second quarter came to a close with the Lasers taking a 34-15 lead. 
  • Wilkins would knock down a free throw and layup to start off the third quarter for the Chargers, but the Lasers responded by going on a quick 6-0 run to extend their lead to 22 points, but first year Tanner Drury (Bethel, Vt.) would hit a three-pointer to halt the run with 4:36 left in the third quarter. Lasell continued to knock down shots and ended the third quarter taking a 49-22 lead over the Chargers. 
  • First-year Sierra Derby (Richford, Vt.) would spark a 10-2 run for the Chargers chipping in eight of the ten points with 6:37 left in the final quarter. The Lasers continued to battle and extend their lead, but Grillone hit another three-pointer to cut the lead. Drury would chip in her second three-pointer of the game to cut the Lasers lead to 21 points, but the Lasers would continue to battle and came away with the 61-40 lead over the Chargers. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Grillone tallied eight points (3-5 FG, 2-3 3 PT), two rebounds, and one steal with Drury adding eight points (2-3 FG, 2-3 3 PT, 2-2 FT), one rebound, and two steals. Derby recorded eight points (3-6 FG, 2-4 FT), three rebounds, and one steal while Wilkins added seven points (2-6 FG, 3-4 FT), one assist and four steals for the Chargers. 
  • Blaize Mack paced the Lasers with 12 points (6-10 FG), 10 rebounds, and three steals while Shirle Major chipped in eight points (4-12 FG) and two steals. 
  • The Chargers shot 66.7% from the free throw line and had 19 points off of the bench. The Lasers shot 47.6% from the free throw line and recorded 38 points in the paint.

The Chargers return to action on Thursday as they take a quick break from conference play and travel to take on Mount Holyoke at 12PM.
