Chargers Fall to Albertus Magnus in GNAC Opener

NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The Colby-Sawyer Women's basketball team fell on the road in its opening Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game to  Albertus Magnus College Saturday afternoon 70-51.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Falcons would kick off the opening quarter by going on an 8-1 run, but first-year Hayden Wilkins (North Concord, Vt.) would hit a three-pointer to halt the Falcons run. A made three-pointer by first-year Lauren MacDonald (Tilton, N.H.) and made layup by sophomore Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) would cut the Falcons lead to six points with 4:43 left in the opening quarter. The Falcons would go on an 11-2 run as the first quarter would come to close with the home team taking a 26-11 lead over the visiting Chargers. 
  • Wilkins would get the Chargers on the board to start the second quarter by making a layup, but the Falcons responded with a layup of their own. MacDonald would hit her second three-pointer of the game to cut the Falcons lead to sixteen points. The Falcons would continue to extend their lead by going on a 13-6 run to end the quarter leading 45-22. 
  • The Falcons started the second half by extending their lead and knocking down shots, but junior Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) would make a pair of free throws followed by a made three-pointer by senior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) to cut the Falcons lead. The Falcons responded to the baskets made by the Chargers and continued to make shots of their own as the Chargers were unable cut the twenty-five-point deficit as the third quarter came to a close with the Falcons leading 64-39. 
  • Junior Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) would score first to start the final quarter of the game by making a layup, which would spark a quick 6-0 run for the Chargers with 7:07 left in the fourth quarter. The Falcons continued to extend their lead and pulled away from the Chargers to pick up the 70-51 win. 
Inside the Numbers: 
  • MacDonald tallied 12 points (4-11 FG, 2-4 3 PT, 2-2 FT), 10 rebounds, and one assist while Holt recorded 9 points (4-11 FG, 1-4 3 PT) and two rebounds. Mitchell added eight points (3-6 FG, 1-13 3 PT, 1-2 FT), 11 rebounds, and one assist. 
  • Caitlyn Scott led the way for the Falcons with 22 points (5-11 FG, 12-14 FT), six rebounds, and two assists while Elizabeth Bruno added 14 points (6-9 FG, 1-1 3 PT, 1-1 FT), three rebounds, and three assists. 
  • The Chargers outrebounded the Falcons by a 50-40 margin while also recording 23 points off of the bench.
