Chargers Effort Not Enough in 74-64 Loss to Cadets

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team fell to Norwich University 74-64 Wednesday night. The Chargers drop to 1-7 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Cadets came out strong with a 6-0 run Wednesday night, with senior Chaz Cullum (Omaha, Neb.) driving to the basket for a layup to put the home team on the board. The teams exchanged baskets throughout the half, but Cullum hit a three-pointer that sparked a 13-0 run for the Chargers giving the home team, a 24-17 lead with 7:00 left in the half. The Cadets responded with two quick layups, trimming the Chargers' lead to three, but sophomore Sean Peterson (Chester, N.H.) hit a jumper to extend the lead. The Cadets nailed a three-pointer in the final minute of the first half to trail the Chargers 33-31 heading into halftime. 
  • Graduate student Bryson Jenkins (Gary, Ind.) got the Chargers on the board with a free throw, followed by a three-pointer from junior AJ Mutiganzi (Burlington, Ontario), extending the Chargers' lead to 37-32 with 16:10 remaining. The teams continued to battle back and forth as neither team was able to take the lead. The Cadets hit key shots late in the half, pushing their lead to 54-47, but senior Nick Grant (Houston, Texas) responded with a jumper to trim the lead to five points. The Cadets then extended their lead to double digits, but a three-pointer from first-year Kayden Hoskins (Littleton, N.H.) brought the Chargers back within seven points as the home team trailed 59-52. The teams kept trading baskets as the Chargers cut the lead to 66-62 with a layup by Grant with 2:02 remaining in the half. The Cadets took advantage of fouls committed by the Chargers in the final minute to take the 74-64 win. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Cullum paced the Chargers with 17 points (7-14 FG, 1-4 3PT, 2-5 FT), eight rebounds, and six assists while Grant added 10 points (5-6 FG) and two rebounds. Peterson chipped in 10 points (5-10 FG) and five rebounds and Mutiganzi tallied 10 points (4-13 FG, 2-4 3PT) and nine rebounds. 
  • Owen Liss let the way for the Cadets with 22 points (7-11 FG, 1-1 3PT, 7-9 FT), 12 rebounds, and five assists while Jalen Olivero recorded 20 points (6-13 FG, 3-8 3PT, 5-5 FT), seven rebounds, and two assists. Kohlby Murray added 16 points (6-19 FG, 3-12 3PT, 1-1 FT), five rebounds, and two steals. 
  • The Chargers shot 40% from the field and recorded 36 points in the paint. The Cadets shot 40.7% from the field and 85.7% from the free throw line.
