NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell at home Saturday afternoon to Johnson and Wales University, 86-74.
Rapid Recap:
- First-year Hayden Wilkins (North Concord, Vt.) put the Chargers on the board early, scoring consecutive baskets to give the home team a quick 4-0 lead. The Wildcats quickly answered with two layups of their own, tying the game t 4-4. The teams continued to exchange shots, with senior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) scoring a layup to tie the game at 20-20 as the first quarter came to a close.
- The Wildcats opened the second quarter with a quick layup, taking a two-point lead. Junior Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) responded by sinking two free throws to tie the game at 22-22. The teams traded shots throughout the quarter, but the Wildcats went on a 9-0 run late, pulling ahead 35-26. Wilkins ended the run with a layup, and Mitchell followed with back-to-back layups, cutting the lead to six. The Wildcats answered with a three-pointer, extending their lead to nine points with 2:53 remaining. The teams continued to battle, and first-year Lauren MacDonald (Tilton, N.H.) added a layup to trim the lead as the Wildcats held a 43-35 lead heading into halftime.
- Junior Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) opened the third quarter with a three-pointer, cutting the Wildcats' lead to five points. The teams would continue to fight, with Holt hitting a three-pointer late in the quarter as the home team trailed 54-48. Wilkins drove to the basket for a layup and followed it up with two free throws with 1:12 remaining in the quarter. The teams exchanged a pair of free throws, and at the end of the third quarter, the Wildcats held a 59-53 lead.
- The Wildcats started the final quarter with a 5-2 run, but the Chargers responded with back-to-back layups from Wilkins and MacDonald trimming the lead to five points with 7:18 left. The teams continued to exchange shots down the final stretch, with Mitchell hitting a layup to bring the Chargers within three points with under five minutes to play. The Wildcats would capitalize on fouls committed by the Chargers in the final two minutes, extending their lead to double digits and securing the 86-74 win.

- Wilkins paced the Chargers with 22 points (10-21 FG, 2-2 FT), four rebounds, and four steals while Mitchell tallied 18 points (6-12 FG, 6_12 FT) and nine rebounds. MacDonald recorded 10 points (5-8 FG) and five rebounds for the Chargers.
- Grace Jaffray led the way for the Wildcats with 32 points (11-21 FG, 3-7 3 PT, 7-16 FT), 12 rebounds, and five steals. Brianne Foley added 20 points (8-17 FG, 4-4 FT), five rebounds, and six assists while Isabella Suero contributed14 points (4-11 FG, 4-9 3 PT, 2-4 FT) and three rebounds.
- The Chargers shot 46.2% from the field and 46.2% from the free throw. The Wildcats shot 46% from the field and 61.8% from the free throw.
