Chargers Power Past Wildcats For First GNAC Win

EW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team picked up their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), defeating the Johnson and Wales Wildcats, 75-57. 

Rapid Recap:
  • Senior Chaz Cullum (Omaha, Neb.) got the Chargers on the board first with a layup, but the Wildcats quickly responded with a layup of their own to keep the score tied early. The teams continued to battle back and forth, with graduate student Bryson Jenkins (Gary, Ind.) hitting a three-pointer, but the Wildcats would answer with a three-pointer of their own. The teams would continue to exchange shots, but Jenkins sparked a 9-0 run for the Chargers with an and-on play with 8:46 remaining in the first half. Sophomore Sean Peterson (Chester, N.H.) followed up with a three-pointer, pushing the Chargers' lead into double digits. Junior AJ Mutiganzi (Burlington, Ontario) drained a three-pointer in the final seconds to give the home team a command 37-23 lead. 
  • The Wildcats opened the second half with back-to-back shots, but Mutiganzi responded with a layup to maintain the Chargers double-digit lead. The teams traded baskets throughout the half, with Jenkins hitting another three-pointer to spark a 7-0 run. The Wildcats quickly answered with a layup to cut into the lead. First-year Brady Rogers (Newfields, N.H.) then knocked down a three-pointer and followed it up with two free throws, pushing the Chargers' lead to 18 points with 12:13 remaining. The Chargers continued to extend their lead late in the half, with Cullum adding a layup to push the lead to 20 points. Mutiganzi capped off the scoring with the final layup of the game, securing the 75-57 win. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Mutiganzi paced the Chargers with 19 points (7-14 FG, 1-1 3PT, 4-4 FT), eight rebounds, and three assists while Jenkins tallied 18 points (6-8 FG, 5-6 3PT, 1-1 FT), three rebounds, and four assists. Cullum added 11 points (5-11 FG, 1-3 FT), six rebounds, and three assists while Rogers recorded 11 points (2-6 FG, 2-6 3PT, 5-5 FT), two rebounds, and two steals for the Chargers. 
  • RJ Jones led the way for the Wildcats with 19 points (6-11 FG, 4-7 3PT, 3-4 FT) and two assists while Josh Zangerle chipped in 11 points (4-19 FG, 3-15 3PT) and three rebounds. 
  • The Chargers shot 54.5% from beyond the arc and 76.5% from the free throw. The Wildcats shot 35% from the field and 58.3% from the free throw.

"It felt great to win today," said junior AJ Mutiganzi (Burlington, Ontario). "After all the adversity we have been through it was important to get the win today, to build our confidence going through the rest of the season."
