NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team picked up a 69-58 win over visiting New England College Tuesday night. The Chargers improve their record to 8-9 overall with the win.
Rapid Recap:
- Junior Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) got the Chargers on the board first, sinking two free throws with 7:25 remaining in the opening quarter. The Pilgrims quickly answered with a jump shot to keep the game tight. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter, with junior Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) hitting two free throws in the final seconds to give the Chargers a 16-15 lead.
- The Pilgrims scored first to start the second quarter, but first-year Lauren MacDonald (Tilton, N.H.) answered with two free throws to give the Chargers an 18-17 lead. Mitchell then converted a layup in the paint to push the Chargers' lead to three, but the Pilgrims quickly responded with a layup of their own to trim the lead to one. The teams continued to trade baskets, and with 2:37 remaining, first-year Tanner Drury (Bethel, Vt.) hit a three-pointer to extend the Chargers' lead to four. Both teams kept scoring as the Chargers went into halftime with a 33-30 advantage.
- MacDonald started the third quarter strong, converting an and-one to push the Chargers' lead to six points. The Pilgrims fought back, cutting the lead to two, but Grillone responded with a clutch three-pointer to maintain the home team's advantage with 7:34 remaining. Later in the quarter, senior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) hit a three-pointer, and Mitchell added two free throws, helping the Chargers extend their lead to 52-46 as the quarter came to a close.
- The Pilgrims scored first in the final quarter, but Grillone answered with a layup to keep the Chargers' lead at six points. The teams continued to battle, and Drury nailed another three-pointer to extend the Chargers' lead to eight with 6:25 remaining. Holt then completed an and-one play, giving the Chargers their first double-digit lead of the game. From there, the Chargers pulled away to secure a 69-58 victory over the Pilgrims.
Inside the Numbers:
- Mitchell paced the Chargers with 21 points (5-13 FG, 11-12 FT), 12 rebounds, and three assists while MacDonald tallied 13 points (5-12 FG, 3-5 FT) and 11 rebounds. Grillone recorded 12 points (4-8 FG, 1-5 3 PT, 3-4 FT), four rebounds, and two assists for the Chargers.
- Amya Moss led the way for the Pilgrims with 22 points (9-18 FG, 2-4 3 PT, 2-4 FT), six rebounds, and five steals while Abigail Lacy added 12 points (4-10 FG, 4-4 FT) and 10 rebounds. Ajayah Lively chipped in 12 points (6-10 FG) and three rebounds.
- The Chargers shot 80.8% from the free throw and recorded 39 rebounds. The Pilgrims shot 57.1% from the free throw and tallied 40 points in the paint.
