Chargers Pick Up First Conference Win

FRANKLIN, MASSACHUSETTS - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team picked up a big win Saturday afternoon over the Dean College Bulldogs 63-58. 

Rapid Recap:
  • First-year Hayden Wilkins (North Concord, Vt.) opened the scoring for the Chargers by knocking down a layup. The Bulldogs would respond with a layup of their own to keep the score close. The teams would trade buckets back-and-forth throughout the opening quarter with the Chargers taking a 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. 
  • The Bulldogs opened the second quarter with two free throws, followed by a layup to take a 15-12 lead. Junior Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) responded with a three-pointer to tie the game at 15-15 with 8:10 remaining. The teams exchanged layups throughout the quarter, but the Bulldogs would knock down layups and free throws to pull ahead, 27-23 as the quarter came to a close. 
  • Grillone started the third quarter with a layup, cutting the Bulldogs' lead to two points. The home team responded with back-to-back layups, pushing their lead to six points, but junior Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) answered with a dominant 6-0 run, hitting three consecutive layups to tie the score at 31-31 with 7:41 remaining. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter, but the Bulldogs were unable to extend their lead to double digits as the quarter would end with the Bulldogs leading 45-40. 
  • Senior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) sparked a 10-3 run in the final quarter, chipping in two layups, while sophomore Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) added a three-pointer and then drove to the basket for another layup with 6:57 remaining. The two teams continued to battle in the final five minutes, exchanging layups to keep the score close. Wilkins made two free throws with 1:21 left to give the Chargers the 59-56 lead and Holt sealed the victory by hitting a free throw and scoring a layup in the final 10 seconds. 
Inside the Numbers: 
  • Holt tallied 13 points (5-10 FG, 3-5 FT), three rebounds, and three steals while Chick added 13 points (5-9 FG, 1-2 3 PT, 2-3 FT), four rebounds, and three assists. Mitchell recorded 10 points (5-11 FG), six rebounds, and two assists for the Chargers. 
  • Azaria Landry paced the Bulldogs with 20 points (8-13 FG, 1-3 3 PT, 3-3 FT), three rebounds, and four steals while Abi Boutin chipped in 12 points (5-14 FG, 2-4 FT) and five assists. Tori Viau added 12 points (5-13 FG, 2-7 3 PT), one rebound, and one steal. 
  • The Chargers outrebounded the Bulldogs 44-30 and shot 55% from the free throw line while the Bulldogs shot 42.9% from the field and recorded 25 defensive rebounds. 
Post-Game Press: 
"The win was great today," said sophomore Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.). "Our talking and communication along with the 'next play' mentality and staying positive and keeping the energy high helped us win today. We will carry that energy with us for the game on Tuesday with New England College."
