NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team fell at home Saturday afternoon to the Saint Joseph's (Maine) Monks 95-61. The Chargers fall to 0-3 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.
Rapid Recap:
- Senior Chaz Cullum (Omaha, Neb.) would open the scoring for the Chargers by driving into the paint and knocking down a layup. Junior AJ Mutiganzi (Burlington, Ontario) would make a layup to give the home team an early 4-2 lead over the visiting Monks. Graduate student Bryson Jenkins (Gary, Ind.) would knock down a three-pointer to extend the Chargers lead to four points. The Monks responded and went on a 13-4 run, but a made jumper by Cullum would halt the run and Jenkins knocking down his second three-pointer to tie the score at 18-18 with 12:20 left to play in the half. The teams continued to battle late in the half with the Monks taking a four-point lead, but first-year Brady Rogers (Newfields, N.H.) would make a layup to cut the visitors lead to one point. The Monks would continue to hit their shots and extended their lead to double digits with the first half coming to a close with the visitors leading 45-33.
- The Monks came out hot in the second half 17-2 run with Rogers knocking down a pair of free throws to cut the visitors lead to 25 points with fifteen minutes left to play in the second half. The Monks would continue to knock down shots and extended their lead as the Chargers struggled to make shots of their own. First-year Andrew Blunt (Alexandria, Virginia) would hit a three-pointer late in the half to trim the Monks lead, but the Chargers were unable to get within thirty-four points as the Monks would come away with the 95-61 win.
Inside the Numbers:
- Cullum paced the Chargers with 14 points (6-12 FG, 2-2 FT), seven rebounds, and two steals while Mutiganzi tallied 12 points (5-8 FG, 2-2 FT), five rebounds, and four assists. Jenkins recorded nine points (3-11 FG, 3-9 3 PT), three rebounds, and one block.
- John Paul Frazier led the way for the Monks with 20 points (8-14 FG, 4-9 3 PT), three rebounds, and one steal while Ismail Silvano added 17 points (7-9 FG, 2-3 3 PT, 1-1 FT), two rebounds, and three assists. Wani Donato chipped in 15 points (6-10 FG, 1-1 3 PT, 2-2 FT), eight rebounds, and four assists for the Monks.
- The Monks tallied 52 points in the paint and shot 73.3% from the free throw line. The Chargers shot 84.6% from the free throw line and recorded 32 points in the paint.
