Chargers Drop GNAC Contest in Overtime to Rivier

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball dropped a tough overtime Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup to Rivier on Wednesday falling by a 80-77 final. Colby-Sawyer currently sits in the 8th seed in the playoffs with three games to play. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers quickly fell behind by a 5-0 margin, but junior Chaz Cullum (Omaha, Neb.) willed the home team into the lead with six points while also getting an assist to junior Bullen Taban (Phoenix, Ariz.) as Colby-Sawyer led 8-5 early. After Nikolas Pignone netted another three, the Chargers scored six-straight points with two layups for Taban and another by junior Nick Grant (Houston, Texas) to take a lead. Graduate student Bryson Jenkins (Gary, Ind.) dropped in his first three since returning, but two threes by Pignone gave the Raiders a 19-17 lead. The teams traded buckets and after triples by Jenkins and Cullum the Chargers grabbed a small 26-25 lead. Rivier took a slight lead in the next stretch, but a 11-0 run gave the Chargers a seven point lead before the Raiders countered to end the half only down 41-38. 
  • Cullum once again kicked off the second half with a flashy finish, but the Raiders continued to counter to even the scire at 47-47. Junior Cha'Mar Martin (Columbia, S.C.) sparked a 7-2 run to give the Chargers another slight 54-49 lead, but Rivier continued to chip away evening the score at 58-58 with 6:12 to play in regulation. Two clutch three-pointers by junior Mike Joanou (Burbank, Calif.) and Jenkins evened the score at 69-69 as both teams had a final chance and missed as we went to overtime. 
  • In overtime the the Raiders quickly grabbed lead and after buckets by Martin and Grant the Chargers only saw a one point deficit with 1:22 to play. Robenson Baguidy buried the Chargers with a step-back three to push the lead to four. The Chargers had a chance to even the score, but a missed free throw helped the Raiders escape New London with the win. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Cullum led the offense with 18 points (8-14 FG, 1-2 3PT, 1-4 FT) to go with nine rebounds and four assists. Martin tallied 17 points (5-9 FG, 1-2 3PT, 6-9 FT) and four rebounds, while Jenkins added 11 points (4-12 FG, 3-8 3PT) and four rebounds. Grant registered another 10 points (4-7 FG, 1-2 3PT, 1-2 FT), five rebound, three steal game in the loss. 
  • Pignone led the Raiders with 23 points (8-18 FG, 7-16 3PT) to go with a pair of steals. Baguidy was huge down the stretch with 17 points (5-13 FG, 3-7 3PT, 4-8 FT), eight rebounds and two assists. 
  • The Raiders got the 50-50 balls tonight with 17 offensive rebounds and 14 second chance points in the win.

The Chargers will travel to Boston for a clash with Emmanuel on Saturday with a 1:00 PM start.
