Chargers Fall in Regular Season Finale to University of Saint Joseph (Conn.)

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.  – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball concluded its regular season campaign on Saturday falling to the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) by a 75-48 final. The Chargers did clinch a spot in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Play-In round earning the 10th seed. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • Sophomore Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) kicked off the game with a three-pointer right out the gate, but the Blue Jays scored 10 of the first 13 points to earn an early seven point advantage. Junior Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) and junior Gabby Lucertini (Branford, Conn.) kept the Chargers in the game with three baskets between the pair as the visitors trailed by a 14-9 margin. After a first year Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) basket to cut the deficit to three the Blue Jays responded closing the quarter with six-straight to hold a 20-11 lead into the second quarter. 
  • Grillone started the second quarter similar to the first quarter with a three to trim the USJ lead to eight, but the Blue Jays continued on the attack getting the lead to 32-18 with 3:18 to play in the quarter. Lucertini, Brewster and graduate student Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.) all added buckets but the Chargers still trailed by 14 as we headed to halftime. 
  • Chick and Raynowska scored back-to-back buckets to trim the deficit to 40-28 out of the halftime break and after a junior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) three the Chargers only saw themselves down 10 points with 5:16 to play in the third quarter. The teams traded baskets, but a pair of Holt free throws closed the quarter with Colby-Sawyer only down nine with 10 minutes to play. 
  • The Blue Jays started off the fourth with a message scoring 15-consecutive points to jump the lead to 24 points. Junior Natalie Panagrosso (Wallingford, Conn.) stopped the run with a basket , but the Blue Jays continued to score at will. First year Delaney Raymond (Lyndon, Vt.) scored the final Charger basket drilling a three as Colby-Sawyer picked up the loss. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Brewster had a stellar day for Colby-Sawyer with 16 points (7-9 FG, 2-5 FT), four rebounds and two assists. Grillone tallied eight points (3-6 FG, 2-4 3PT) to go with three rebounds, while Chick added six points (2-8 FG, 0-4 3PT, 2-2 FT), eight boards and a steal. 
  • Jordan Ouellette paced the Blue Jays with 22 points (10-15 FG, 2-2 FT), nine rebounds and a block. Taylor Verboven added 12 points (6-13 FG), six rebounds and five assists.
