NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team picked up their fifth Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game on Wednesday defeating Regis by a 80-76 final in overtime.
Rapid Recap:
- The game started with a technical free throw, but the Chargers battled back going on a 8-2 run with five-points for junior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) and a triple by sophomore Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.). Courtney Doherty stopped the run with a three, but four free throws by junior Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) kick started a 11-0 run capped off by a Mitchell and-one pushed the lead to 19-6. Another three by Holt kept the lead at 13, but the Pride finished off with a flurry to cut the deficit to 24-14 headed into the second.
- Sophomore Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) and Mitchell added a bucket to push the lead to 14 points. The Pride cut the lead to 30-22, but a 5-0 run by first year Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) pushed the lead back to 13. Junior Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) sparked an 8-0 run of her own to get the lead to a game-high 18 points with 1:35 to play in the half, but Regis answered with five-straight to head into the break down 13.
- The Pride came out firing to start the third quarter going on a 15-4 run over the first six minutes to cut the Charger lead to just two points. Graduate student Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.) buried a three and added a layup to stop the run, but the Pride stayed clicking cutting the home lead to 53-52 headed into the fourth.
- Junior Gabby Lucertini (Branford, Conn.) and first year Bree Lawrence (Swanzey, N.H.) added some insurance to kick off the fourth netting back-to-back threes, with another layup by Lucertini to give the Chargers a nine point lead with 8:37 to play. The Pride continued to chip away using a closing 10-2 spurt to knot the game up 67-67 in the final seconds. The Chargers had a chance to win the game, but the free throws couldn't find the bottom of the net to force overtime.
- Mitchell took over the extra time getting a pair of free throws and a layup as the lead blossomed to 72-67 with 2:51 to play. The Pride answered with four-consecutive points, but Chick made a clutch free throw and Mitchell added a jumper to keep the lead at four points with 30 seconds to play. Free throws put the game away for the home team who now has a high chance at a play-in berth.
