OWLS OUTPACE CHARGERS TO CLAIM 92-73 WIN

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team fell at home Saturday afternoon to the Owls of Westfield State 92-73. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Owls would score first to start the first half and would go on an 11-3, but senior Cha'Mar Martin (Columbia, S.C.) would make a layup to halt the Owls momentum with 15:37 left in the quarter. The Owls would respond and go on a 15-4, but layups by junior AJ Mutiganzi (Burlington, Ontario) and graduate student Bryson Jenkins (Gary, Ind.) would get the Chargers within 13 points with 9:24 left in the opening half. The teams would trade shots late in the half with senior Chaz Cullum (Omaha, Neb.) chipping in a layup and Martin making two free throws. The Owls would close out the first half taking a 44-32 lead over the Chargers.
  • The Owls would start the second half making a layup, but a three-pointer by Jenkins and made layup by Cullum kept the game within 11 points early in the half. The Chargers would respond the Owls lead and go on an 8-2 with baskets by sophomore Sean Peterson (Chester, N.H.) Martin, and Mutiganzi to get the Chargers within five points. The Owls continued to extend their lead and went on a 7-0 run, but Jenkins would make a pair of free throws and Cullum added a layup to cut the Owls lead to single digits with 12 minutes left in the second half. The Owls responded to the Charger's late run and continued to hit their shots and extend their lead to 17 points with less than five minutes left to play. The Chargers were unable to hit shots, and the Owls would increase their lead and came away with the 92-73 victory. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Jenkins led the way for the Chargers with 22 points (8-17 FG, 3-11 3 PT, 3-3 FT), one assist, and two steals while Martin recorded 19 points (6-14 FG, 1-2 3 PT, 6-6 FT), seven rebounds, and four steals. Mutiganzi rounded out the scoring for the Chargers with 10 points (5-8 FG), four rebounds, and one block. 
  • Kenney Rogers recorded 24 points (8-17 FG, 2-5 3 PT, 6-8 FT), ten rebounds, and four assists for the Owls while Angel Price-Espada added 19 points (8-13 FG, 3-6 3 PT), three rebounds, and five assists. 
  • The Owls shot 42% from beyond the arc and took advantage of a 21-14 fast break points margin over the Chargers. 
Up Next:
The Chargers will take a break but return to action on December 28th when they travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. to compete in the Medgar Evers College Tournament. Colby-Sawyer will open the tournament against SUNY Polytechnic with a 3:00 PM start.
