BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team dropped their first game of the Medgar Evers tournament to SUNY Polytechnic 74-67 on Saturday afternoon.
Rapid Recap:
- The Wildcats would kick off the scoring and went on a 10-0 run, but senior Chaz Cullum (Omaha, Neb.) would make a jumper to get the Chargers on the board. The teams would continue to trade buckets back and forth throughout the half with first-year Brady Rogers (Newfields, N.H.) making a pair of free throws with 7:35 left in the opening half. Rogers would follow up with a made layup to cut the Wildcats lead to two points. The Wildcats would go on a quick 8-4 run, but junior AJ Mutiganzi (Burlington, Ontario) would knock down a layup to keep the game within two points with less than one minute left in the half. The Wildcats would make a three-pointer in the final seconds of the half to take a 38-31 lead over the Chargers.
- Cullum would open the second half making a quick layup to cut the Wildcats' lead, followed by a made layup by senior Cha'Mar Martin (Columbia, S.C.) to get the Chargers within three points. The teams would continue to trade buckets early in the second half with Rogers hitting a three-pointer and sophomore Sean Peterson (Chester, N.H.) making a layup to keep the Wildcats lead to single digits. Graduate student Bryson Jenkins (Gary, Ind.) would spark a 10-3 run for the Chargers by nailing a three-pointer with 12:32 left to play. The Wildcats continued to chip away at the Chargers lead, but a made jumper by Cullum kept the Chargers on top. The Wildcats continued to battle and went on a 19-8 run late in the half to take a 70-62 lead with 1:41 left to play. Mutiganzi would chip in a made layup and pair of free throws in the final minute, but the Wildcats were able to pull away and take the 74-67 win.
Inside the Numbers:
- Mutiganzi led the way for the Chargers with 16 points (7-9 FG, 2-2 FT), eight rebounds, and nine assists while Jenkins tallied 13 points (4-18 FG, 3012 3 PT, 2-3 FT), one steal, and two assists. Cullum rounded out the scoring for the Chargers with 12 points (6-13 FG), six rebounds, and two steals.
- Daimarr Miller recorded 22 points (7-15 FG, 6-13 3 PT, 2-2 FT), six assists, and five steals for the Wildcats.
- The Chargers took advantage of 40-16 points in the paint margin while also leading with 27-14 bench points in Saturday's game.
