CHARGERS HOLD OFF PANTHERS IN 51-44 WIN

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team picked up a huge 51-44 win over the Panthers Wednesday night and improved their record to 5-0. This is the first time that the team has started the season 5-0 since 2006. 

Rapid Recap:
  • Junior Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) got the Chargers on the board first hitting a three pointer, but the Panthers responded with a layup of their own to keep the score close. The Chargers went on a 7-2 run sparked by a Mitchell layup, with sophomore Emma Felker (Dracut, Mass.) nailing the three-pointer, giving the home team the 10-4 lead with 2:16 left in the quarter. The Panthers continued to battle with a made layup and free throw as they trailed the Chargers 10-7 at the end of the first quarter. 
  • The Panthers started the scoring in the second quarter with a layup, but Felker responded with a three-pointer to give the Chargers a 13-9 lead with 7:37 left to play. The Panthers went on a 7-3 run before senior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) made a layup to give the Chargers a one-point lead with 2:03 left in the quarter. The two teams would continue to trade layups and free throws back-and-forth, with a late layup by the Panthers tied the game at 21-21 heading into the half. 
  • First-year Hayden Wilkins (North Concord, Vt.) kicked off the scoring for the Chargers with a three pointer, but the Panthers would respond a minute later with a free throw and three-pointer to take a 25-24 lead with 8:06 left in the quarter. Wilkins responded to the Panthers lead with another three-pointer, but the Panthers would make a layup to tie the game at 27-27 with 6:33 to play. The Chargers would finish off the quarter with a 10-3 run sparked by first-year Molly Dennis (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) as the Chargers took a 37-30 with one quarter left to play. 
  • The Panthers took a quick 3-0 run in the final quarter, but senior Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) halted the run with a layup. The Panthers responded and went on 6-2, with Felker nailing the three pointer, giving the Chargers the five point lead with 3:24 left to play. The teams would continue to battle in the final two minutes of action trading baskets back-and-forth with Wilkins, Holt, and Mitchell making their free throws respectively as the Chargers would win 51-44 at the final buzzer. 
Post Game Press:
"Today's win was huge for us," said sophomore Emma Felker (Dracut, Mass.). "It is the first time the team has been 5-0 since 2006. We distributed the ball throughout everyone tonight and it was truly a team win. It was great to get the win tonight, but back to work tomorrow getting ready for Fitchburg."

Inside the Numbers:
  • Mitchell led the way for the Chargers with 15 points (5-11 FG, 2-4 3 PT, 3-4 FT), 10 rebounds, six assists, and five steals while Felker tallied nine points (3-7 FG, 3-7 3 PT), one rebound, and one assist. Wilkins chipped in eight points (2-7 FG, 2-5 3 PT, 2-2 FT) two rebounds, and two steals, Brewster rounded out the scoring with seven points (2-8 FG, 3-6 FT), 10 rebounds, two assists, and one block. 
  • Ashley Stephens recorded 18 points (4-14 FG, 1-2 3 PT, 3-7 FT), seven rebounds and two steals while Kaley Goodhart added eight points (4-10 FG, 0-2 3 PT), three assists, and two steals. 
  • The Chargers took advantage of a 20-17 points off of turnovers margin and an 8-6 second chance points margin in Wednesday's win.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday when they host the Falcons of Fitchburg State with a 1:00 PM start.
