BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball fell on the road Friday night to UMASS Boston in overtime 87-82.
Rapid Recap:
- First-year Elijah Thomas (Fairfax, Virginia) sparked a 5-3 run early in the first half with a made layup followed by a made free throw. The Beacons cut the Chargers' lead to two points with a made three pointer and then responded with another three pointer to take an early lead. The Chargers and Beacons continued to battle trading points back and forth with junior Allen Mutiganzi Jr. (Burlington, Ontario) chipping in a quick two points and then Thomas adding a made layup a minute later. The Beacons continued to fight, tying the game at 15-15 with 10:00 minutes of action left to play in the first half. The Beacons took a quick lead, but made jumpers by senior Chaz Cullum (Omaha, Neb.) and graduate student Bryson Jenkins (Gary, Ind.) cut the lead to two points, the home team responded with a three pointer to take a lead with 7:00 minutes left in the half. The two teams continued to trade points back and forth throughout the half with seniors Cha'Mar Martin (Columbia, S.C.) and Cullum making layups and Jenkins nailing a three pointer as the Chargers trailed the Beacons 44-40 heading into halftime.
- Mutiganzi Jr. got the Chargers on the board first in the second half with a made jumper followed by another made jumper three minutes later by graduate student Michael Joanou (Burbank, Calif.) to tie the game at 46-46 with 15:00 minutes left to play. The teams continued to trade points back and forth with Joanou knocking down a three pointer and Jenkins making a layup to give the visitors the 52-50 lead. Thomas would extend the Chargers lead with back-to-back three pointers, but the Beacons responded a three pointer of their own to cut the Chargers lead to one point with 10:13 left to play. Senior Nick Grant (Houston, Texas) extended the Chargers lead with a made layup, but a pair of made free throws and a three pointer by the Beacons kept the game within one point with seven minutes left to play. The teams continued to battle with under 2:00 minutes left of action as Cullum made a free throw and layup to extend the Chargers lead to 75-72, but the Beacons did not give up and made back-to-back layups to take a 76-75 lead with 0:46 seconds left to play. Cullum responded with a pair of made free throws to take the 77-76 lead with 0:22 seconds remaining, but a late foul by the Chargers gave the Beacons the chance to take the lead, but the Beacons made one of two free throws, forcing the game into overtime.
- The Beacons took a quick two-point lead over the Chargers with a pair of made free throws, but Martin responded with a free throw and made layup to give the Chargers the 80-79 lead with 2:11 left to play. Cullum would extend the Chargers lead with a dunk, but the Beacons drove in the paint and made the layup as they trailed the Chargers 82-81 with 1:35 left in overtime. The Beacons went on a 6-0 run in the last minute of the game and came away with the 87-82 win over the Chargers.

- Thomas led the way for the Chargers with 19 points (7-10 FG, 2-2 3 PT, 3-4 FT), six rebounds, and two steals. Cullum tallied 17 points (6-14 FG, 5-9 FT), seven rebounds, and four steals. Joanou chipped in 10 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 3 PT), six rebounds, and one steal. Grant would also add 10 points (5-9 FG), two rebounds, and two blocks.
- Cameron Perkins led the way for the Beacons with 25 points (10-13 FG, 1-4 3 PT, 4-6 FT), six rebounds, and one steal while Emanuel Zayas recorded 22 points (7-15 FG, 4-7 3 PT, 4-5 FG), six rebounds, and five assists.
- The Chargers took a slight 25-21 points off turnovers margin against the Beacons while also having a 20-12 second chance points margin advantage.
