Chargers Drop Thursday Game to United States Coast Guard Academy

NEW LONDON, Conn.  – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team dropped its contest on Thursday afternoon falling to the United States Coast Guard Academy by a 72-45 final. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers struggled out of the gate as the Bears scored 20-consecutive points before junior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) knocked down a jumper from junior Natalie Panagrosso (Wallingford, Conn.). Coast Guard would extend the lead to 29-3 headed into the second quarter. 
  • Colby-Sawyer scored four-straight to kick off the second quarter as junior Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) netted a pair of free throws before sophomore Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) got a steal and layup. Junior Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) netted two threes in the quarter along with a jumper by first year Bree Lawrence (Swanzey, N.H.) as the Chargers trailed by a 46-18 score at the half. 
  • Sophomore Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) drilled a three early in the second half, but the Bears continued to score in bunches using a 16-3 run to lead by a 62-21 margin. Lawrence stopped the run with a shot from behind the arc followed by two more threes by Grillone and Holt to cut the lead to 32 with 10 minutes to play. 
  • After five-straight points by the Bears, Colby-Sawyer fought back with a 15-2 run highlighted by five points for first year Catherine Chick. Coast Guard closed out the game with a three to pick up the 72-45 win.
Post Game Press:
"Today was a good test and we saw first hand the type of speed, athleticism, pace and ball movement it takes to be a top team in the region", said head coach Tim Viola. "The first quarter wasn't pretty but I thought we settled in and began doing what we needed to do to find success. We need to carry those things into Saturday as we resume GNAC play."

Inside the Numbers:
  • Molettieri led the offense for the Chargers with 10 points (3-6 FG, 3-5 3PT, 1-4 FT). Holt registered seven points (3-7 FG, 1-3 3PT) and three swipes, Grillone tallied five points 2-9 FG, 1-5 3PT), three steals and three boards. Mitchell added six points 2-5 FG, 2-4 3PT, six rebounds and two steals. 
  • Kira Wood led the Bears with 14 points (5-8 FG, 2-4 3PT, 2-3 FT), four rebounds and three helpers. Dorothy Stotts added 13 points (5-17 FG, 3-8 3PT), six assists, three steals and three rebounds in the win. 
  • Coast Guard outscored the Chargers by a 32-10 margin in the painted area, while also netting 20 points off of turnovers. Colby-Sawyer out scored the Bears behind the arc scoring eight three-pointers compared to just seven from Coast Guard.

Colby-Sawyer will stay on the road, heading up to Standish, Maine on Saturday with a 1:00 PM start.
