PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team dropped its third Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game on the year on Saturday getting blown out by Johnson & Wales by a 84-65 final.
Rapid Recap:
- Junior Chaz Cullum (Omaha, Neb.) kicked off the game with a quick layup in the paint, but the Wildcats countered with a 9-2 run to hold a five-point advantage. Junior Bullen Taban (Phoenix, Ariz.) stopped the run with a finish under the basket, followed by a finish and three by Cullum as the Wildcats continued to lead by a 13-11 margin. First year Sean Peterson (Chester, N.H.) provided another spark off the bench with eight points in the first half to cut the lead to 24-22 with 8:46 to play. Junior Nick Grant (Houston, Texas) cut the Wildcat lead to just a single point after netting a three, but the home team hit back with a 12-0 run to expand the lead to 40-27. Cullum laced his second triple to stop the run followed by a high-flying dunk as the Chargers trailed by eight headed into the break.
- A quick 11-2 run by the Wildcats kicked off the second half as the lead ballooned to 17 points. Taban, Cullum and junior Cha'Mar Martin (Columbia, S.C.) tried to keep the Chargers in the game cutting the deficit to 55-42, but the Wildcats continued the hot shooting lifting the lead to 20 points with 10:10 to play. Sophomore Sadiq Abdullahi (Homestead, Fla.) added back-to-back Charger buckets to try and get Colby-Sawyer back into the game, but the Wildcats continued to control the game leading by 23 points with under six minutes to play. The Chargers would not get within 17 points the rest of the way as the Wildcats picked up the big GNAC win.
Inside the Numbers:
- Cullum poured in a new career-high 21 points (8-13 FG, 2-4 3PT, 3-5 FT) to go with five assists, five boards and three steals. Grant managed 11 points (5-10 FG, 1-2 3PT, 0-1 FT), while Peterson was the last Charger in double-figures with 10 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 3PT). Taban added seven points (2-3 FG, 3-6 FT), four rebounds two assists and two blocks.
- Izaiah Shaw-Glen led the way for the Wildcats with 27 points (9-13 FG, 3-3 3PT, 6-6 FT) to go with seven rebounds, while Aireus Raspberry added 22 points (9-16 FG, 3-4 3PT, 1-2 FT), 10 assists and eight rebounds.
- The Chargers allowed the Wildcats to shoot 56.1% (32-57) from the floor and 50.0% (8-16) from behind the arc, while only mustering a 45.3% (24-53) from the floor and 33.3% (5-15) from three. The Wildcats also owned the glass with a 37-24 rebounding advantage.
