NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball dropped their third-straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game of the season falling to Elms by a 59-51 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Chargers started off fast with a layup by sophomore Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) and a pair of free throws by sophomore Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.). The Blazers countered with a 7-2 run to take the early lead, but a jumper by Grillone and another by junior Gabby Lucertini (Branford, Conn.) gave Colby-Sawyer a 10-7 lead with 1:43 to play in the quarter. Lucertini added a triple to give the Chargers a 13-11 lead into the break.
- First year Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) started off the second quarter with a bucket in the paint, but a 9-0 counter punch by Elms gave the visitors a four-point lead. Junior Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) attacked the rack and scored cutting the score to 19-17, but Elms closed on a 7-3 run to hold a 26-20 lead into halftime.
- Junior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) laced a three to cut the deficit to three, but the Blazers added six-straight to push the lead to a game-high nine points with 8:04 to play. Mitchell put in a layup in the paint to start a 13-4 run highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers by junior Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.). Elms countered once again with seven points in a row. The Chargers battled back trailing 44-40 entering the fourth quarter.
- The Blazers jumped the lead back to seven with under six minutes to play. Brewster and Lucertini added three more Charger points to get it back within four points, but Elms quickly pushed the lead to 52-43. Chick finished a layup, two free throws and buried a three in the fourth quarter, but Elms didn't let the lead get within five points the rest of the way to hold on to the win.
Inside the Numbers:
- Lucertini tallied 12 points (4-11 FG, 2-6 3PT, 2-3 FT), seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Chick registered nine points (3-9 FG, 1-3 3PT, 2-2 FT) and 12 rebounds. Brewster added nine points (3-8 FG, 3-4 FT), seven rebounds and a pair of assists. Mitchell contributed five points (2-6 FG, 0-1 3PT, 1-2 FT), a new career-high 14 rebounds and two steals.
- Julianne Liebow led the Blazers with 15 points (5-15 FG, 3-8 3PT, 2-4 FT), five steals and four rebounds. Rahmia Johnston added 11 points (2-12 FG, 0-4 3PT, 7-8 FT), 10 rebounds and two assists.
