Chargers Walk It Off Against Lesley University

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team picked up a non-conference win on Thursday night defeating Lesley University by a 9-8 final. First year Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) was the hero of the game getting hit by a pitch to bring in the winning run. 
 
Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers struck first as senior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) doubled to left field to score first year Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.). The Lynx countered in the top half of the third inning scoring four runs on two hits and three errors. Justin Dennett had the big plate appearance knocking a single to left center to score two. The lead continued to grow in the fifth inning as Adam Budorick knocked a sacrifice fly to right to score another Lynx. 
  • The Chargers offense woke back up in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs as Schmitt singled to shortstop. Watson delivered a single down the right field line before stealing second. Choiniere delivered the clutch hit with a two RBI single to right over the first baseman to cut the lead to 5-3 with four innings remaining. In the sixth inning Schmitt delivered again with a single up the middle to score sophomore Brady Holmes (West Yarmouth, Mass.) who got on with a single to lead off the inning. 
  • In the top of the seventh now trailing just 5-4 the Chargers would allow two more runs on two hits and an error in the field. Colby Jacobs had the big hit in the inning lifting an RBI triple. In the ninth inning the Lynx added another insurance run on two hits with Jake Samela delivering an RBI single. 
  • In the bottom of the ninth the Chargers quickly loaded the bases as Watson, first year Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) and Choiniere all drew walks. Senior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) picked up the first RBI getting hit by a pitch. Carignan would touch home to make it 8-6 on a wild pitch. Sophomore Bailey Camacho (Attleboro, Mass.) followed it up getting plunked as well to cut the lead just 8-7. Sophomore Griffin Wheeler (Penacook, N.H.) drew a walk in the next at bat to tie the game before Schmitt got hit to conclude the game and walk it off. 
Player Spotlight:
"This win is good momentum for us", said first year Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.). "It was non-conference, but we got the job done today. In the at bat my thought was to just put the ball in play, but it ended up hitting me to win us the game."

On the Mound:
  • First year Will Carpenter (Medfield, Mass.) got the starting nod, tossing three innings allowing four runs all unearned with four strikeouts. Sophomore Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) followed with an inning of work allowing an run. Junior Matt Miller (Dracut, Mass.) pitched third out of the bullpen with two scoreless frames. Sophomore Kenneth Spratt (Wantagh, N.Y.) was next allowing two unearned runs with two punch outs. Junior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) followed with a clean inning while sitting one batter down. Watson picked up the winning tossing the ninth inning allowing a run. 
At the Plate:
  • Choiniere led the offense going 3-for-4 with a double, walk and three RBI. Schmitt followed with a 2-for-3 day with a run scored and two RBI. Watson added a 1-for-2 day with three runs scored and two stolen bags.
Up Next:
The Chargers will conclude the season with senior day on Saturday against Dean College with a doubleheader starting at 11:00 AM.
