STANDISH, Maine – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped two Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games on Saturday during a twin bill against the Saint Joseph's College of Maine. The Chargers are now 4-12 in conference play while the Monks improve to a 9-5 GNAC record.
Game 1 L (4-3):
- The Monks took an early 1-0 led after Jonathan Dube homered to left field in the bottom of the first inning. After two hitless innings, the Charges bats came alive in the top of the fourth started by senior Max Lewis (Durham, N.H.) who singled advancing senior Cooper O'Brien (Vengennes, Vt.) to second base. First year Finn MacLennan (Ipswich, Mass.) followed with an RBI single through the 5–6-hole scoring O'Brien to tie at 1-1. Senior Ben Brennan (Marblehead, Mass.) earned an RBI single to center field giving the Chargers the first lead of the game. Colby-Sawyer added one more run thanks to an RBI single from first year Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) to put the Chargers ahead 3-1.
- In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Monks were able to score a run after Michael Weare grounded out to third allowing Terry Morrissey to tag home making it 3-2. Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Monks got a runner in scoring position after Morrissey doubled down the left field line. St. Joe's would tie the game at 3-3 following an RBI single from Jared Wilhelm. The Monks would take game one by a 4-3 final score after Dube hit the game winning RBI single.
- Junior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) picked up the loss after pitching the entire seven innings for the Chargers. He allowed four earned runs off six hits to go along with three punchouts.
- MacLennan led the offense going 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run including a double. Schmitt also had a 2-for-3 performance with one double and earning an RBI.
Game 2 L (9-2):
- In the bottom of the first inning, the Monks scored three runs off four hits featuring a two-run homer by Matt Thibault. The following inning, Luke Stephens hit his second home run of the season to extend St. Joe's led to 4-0.
- First year Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) picked up an RBI single to center field allowing Schmitt to tag home making it 4-1. In the top of the fifth inning, Colby-Sawyer narrowed the score to 4-2 thanks to an RBI double from first year Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.).
- Dawson Gundlah earned two RBI's after doubling down the left field line making it a 6-2 game. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Monks added three more runs off three hits including the second home run of the day for Thibault. The score would remain the same as the Monks earned the victory by a 9-2 final score.
- First year Marshall Donahue (Montpelier, Vt.) picked up the loss after starting at the mound allowing four runs off six hits and one strikeout. First year Justin Powers (Peabody, Mass.) pitched for four innings giving up two runs off two hits and earning a pair of punchouts. Sophomore Erik Rohs (Lovettsville, Va.) followed pitching for two innings allowing three runs off four hits while first year Will Carpenter closed out for the Chargers with a clean inning.
- Schmitt led the offense going 2-for-4 with two runs and double. Watson went 1-for-4 with his RBI double while Montalvo earned one RBI after going 1-for-3.
