Chargers Split With Anna Maria College in GNAC Doubleheader

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team split wins with Anna Maria College on Friday. 
 
Game 1 W (4-3):
  • Sophomore Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) got the start for the Chargers getting two punch outs in the first inning to keep the game at 0-0. Colby-Sawyer took a 1-0 lead   in the top of the third inning as first year Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) reached on a throwing error, scoring first year Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.). In the bottom of the frame the AMCATS tied the game on a sacrifice fly. The Chargers took the 2-1 lead in the fourth inning as senior Ben Brennan (Marblehead, Mass.) dropped down a squeeze bunt to score senior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.). 
  • In the top of the sixth inning, O'Brien led off with his sixth long ball of the year to extend the lead to 3-1. Mullen allowed his second run of the day in the sixth allowing a base hit to center field to cut the lead to just one. The Chargers got a final run of insurance in the seventh as first year Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) singled to center to score first year Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) who got on via a single to right field. Watson relieved after the first two batters in the final frame allowing a run, but picking up three key outs to secure his first collegiate save.
  • Mullen picked up the win tossing six innings allowing two earned runs with four strikeouts. Watson closed things out with an inning of work allowing a hit and getting one strikeout. 
  • O'Brien led the offense with a 3-for-3 performance with a home run, two runs and a walk. Carignan tallied a 2-for-4 performance with a double and a RBI. Schmitt added a 1-for-3 day with a double and a run. 
Player Spotlight:
"Today was a great team win", said senior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.). "The pitching was outstanding and the bats came to play. It feels really good to take one from a top team in the conference."

Game 2 L (18-2):
  • The Chargers took a quick 2-0 lead on two hits and an error as senior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) doubled to left center to score Watson. O'Brien was up next singling in Choiniere to get the second run. The AMCATS picked up nine runs in the bottom of the first including eight runs against sophomore Kam Lovelette (Enosburg Falls, Vt.). In the bottom of the third inning the home team added two more runs on two hits and two errors to extend the lead to 11-2. The lead grew to 13-2 in the fourth on a two RBI single up the middle. In the fifth inning the AMCATS added a fourteenth run in the fifth before adding four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away.
  • Lovelette picked up the loss allowing eight runs. First year Ethan Clark (Bow, N.H.) pitched four innings allowing three runs with a strikeout. Sophomore Connor Donahue (Uxbridge, Mass.) was next going an inning of work allowing a run on two hits with two punch outs. Sophomore Josh Finkle (Littleton, N.H.) closed things out allowing four runs (two earned). 
  • First year Finn MacLennan (Ipswich, Mass.) led the offense with a 1-for-2 performance with a double. Choiniere went 1-for-3 with a double, RBI and a run scored. O'Brien added a 1-for-3 day with a RBI.

The Colby-Sawyer baseball team will take on the Saint Joseph's College of Maine Monks for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader in Standish, Maine.
