BUZZARDS BAY, Mass.
– The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped its opening two games to Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Sunday. The Chargers lost game one by a 2-1 final before losing the second game 4-0.
Game 1 (L, 2-1):
- The Chargers started the game in the first with a pair of singles from seniors Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) and Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.), but the pair would be stranded heading into the bottom of the first. The Buccaneers picked up their first run of the day in the bottom of the first as a throwing error allowed the home team to touch the plate.
- In the top of the fourth the Chargers were threatening again as junior Jack Matarese (Ashland, Mass.) walked before sophomore Bailey Camacho (Attleboro, Mass.) knocked another single to left field. With two on and one out first year Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) tied the game up lacing a double to right center scoring Matarese. Unfortunately the Chargers couldn't get another run in headed into the bottom of the fourth.

- Sophomore Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) pitched four solid innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits, while having three punch outs. Sophomore Josh Finkle (Littleton, N.H.) was the first Charger out of the bullpen going an inning allowing a hit while also getting one strikeout. Sophomore Kenneth Spratt (Wantagh, N.Y.) was next picking up the loss getting one batter out and allowing an earned run on three hits. Sophomore Erik Rohs (Lovettsville, Va.) closed things out throwing two-thirds of an inning with a strikeout.
Game 2 (L, 4-0):
- The Chargers and Buccaneers were at a standstill after three innings with O'Brien logging the only hit thus far for the visitors. Senior Ben Brennan (Marblehead, Mass.) started the fourth inning with a single and would advance all the way to third, but the Chargers would strand him there.
- In the bottom of the fourth the Buccaneers took the lead with a pick off gone wrong scoring a pair for Massachusetts Maritime to take a 2-0 lead.
- The lead grew in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore Kam Lovelette (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) allowed a single to right-center scoring two more Bucs to double the lead to 4-0. The Chargers could not rally in the seventh leading to the defeat.
- Rogers started the game for the Chargers, conceding the loss. Zach tossed four innings, while allowing a pair of unearned runs on one hit and two walks, while picking up three strikeouts. First year Justin Powers (Peabody, Mass.) had an impressive showing in the fifth inning picking up two strikeouts in a clean inning. Lovelette closed the game with an inning allowing two runs (one earned) on a hit and a hit by pitch. Kam also notched a pair of punchouts in the loss.
