Chargers Start Florida Trip with Pair of Losses to Medaille College

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team began its seven day Florida trip on Saturday with a pair of losses to Medaille College.

Game 1 (L, 15-5):
  • The Mavericks offense erupted in the bottom half of the first inning scoring seven runs on three hits and three fielding errors. The Chargers responded with a single run in the top half of the second inning as senior Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.) walked and then trotted around the bases eventually touching home on a wild pitch. Medaille countered with two more runs in the second getting a two-out double to score a pair.
  • The runs continued to come around for the Mavericks as a three-run homer from Jeff Petrozzini made the contest a 12-1 lead for the home team in game one. In the fourth inning the Chargers plated another as Turpel grounded out to third base scoring senior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.). Colby-Sawyer got the bases loaded later in the inning, but failed to get anyone else across in the fourth.
  • After a clean bottom of the fourth thanks to first year Ethan Clark (Bow, N.H.) the Chargers got another runner across the plate as sophomore Bailey Camacho (Attleboro, Mass.) ripped a single through the right side scoring junior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.). In the bottom of the inning Medaille was at it again scoring three more runs on a two-run blast by Eric Arreola and a sacrifice fly.
  • The Chargers gave one final push in the top half of the seventh scoring a pair of runs as first year year Jare Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) and O'Brien touched the plate.
  • Sophomore Kam Lovelette (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) picked up the loss going one inning, allowing seven runs (five earned) with two strikeouts. Sophomore Connor Donahue (Uxbridge, Mass.) was next going one inning allowing a pair of runs while adding one strikeout. Junior Matt Miller (Dracut, Mass.) pitched the next allowing three runs with a punchout. Clark followed with two innings of work allowing three runs with a K. First year Finn MacLennan (Ipswich, Mass.) closed things out with a clean inning only allowing a pair of walks.
Game 2 (L, 12-7):
  • After a scoreless first inning the Mavericks picked up three runs in the second on three hits. The lead grew to five in the third after a two-run double with one out. Schmitt gave the Chargers life in the bottom of the third launching his first-collegiate hit over the fence.
  • Medaille added two more runs in the top half of the fifth inning on a fielder's choice and sacrifice fly. The Colby-Sawyer bats woke up in the bottom of the fifth inning getting four runs across the plate. The inning started with the first-collegiate hit for first year Janai Cruz (Manchester, N.H.) who scored on a base hit by first year Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.). Schmitt later scored on a wild pitch before senior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) singled through the right side scoring Watson. The final run was scored on a groundout by O'Brien to cut the Mavericks lead to just two.
  • In the top half of the six the Mavericks got some much needed insurance getting five more runs. The Chargers got one run in the sixth and seventh including an inside the park homer by O'Brien, but the Chargers fell by a 12-7 final.
