DAVENPORT, Fla.
– The Colby-Sawyer Chargers baseball team had a massive day at the plate scoring 37 total runs in two blowout victories over the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Game 1 (W, 18-9):
- The Chargers jumped ahead early as senior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) launched an inside the park homerun scoring first year Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) and first year Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.). In the bottom of the second the Chargers got another homer this time from first year Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) took the Owls deep over the left field fence scoring senior Max Lewis (Durham, N.H.) to put the home team up 5-0 after two innings.
- In the bottom of the fifth inning the Chargers started rolling getting five more runs on four hits. It started with a Montalvo double, who scored on a groundout by O'Brien. Lewis followed it up with a RBI single to add another run, before Schmitt doubled deep to left center clearing the bases to add three more. In the top half of the sixth the Owls finally got to sophomore starter Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) getting four runs on four hits.
- In the bottom of the frame the Chargers punched back putting up eight runs on five hits. O'Brien started it off with a three-run blast. Sophomore Griffin Wheeler (Penacook, N.H.) added the next RBI with a bases loaded walk, which was followed by a first year Nick Johnson (Manchester, N.J.) laced a double to right-center scoring two more Chargers. Montalvo kept the bats rolling with a two-RBI single up the middle to put up the 18 runs. The Owls had one final chance getting five runs in the seventh on four hits, but still picked up the loss by a 18-9 final.
- Mullen picked up the win tossing six innings of work allowing four runs on five hits. Jack also matched his career-best with nine strikeouts. Sophomore Kenneth Spratt (Wantagh, N.Y.) pitched the final inning allowing five runs (two earned), while adding one punch out.
- The offense was led by O'Brien who went 2-for-4 with a pair of homers and seven RBIs. Schmitt added a 2-for-2 performance with a home run and a double with five runs-batted-in. Montalvo tallied a 4-for-4 game one scoring three runs and bringing home two more.
Game 2 (W, 19-2):
- Colby-Sawyer's bats continued to be red hot in the second game scoring five runs in the first inning. It started with senior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) singled through the right side scoring Watson and Montalvo. The Chargers added another run as first year Mike McLeer (Saco, Maine) doubled in Choiniere, before a RBI groundout by first year Finn MacLennan (Ipswich, Mass.) made it 4-0. First year Janai Cruz (Manchester, N.H.) finished off the inning with a RBI double to left field. The Owls cut into the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a run.
- In the second inning the Chargers got two more runs as Choiniere got another run scoring single while first year Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) shot a ground-rule double to score another. In the third inning the Chargers had their best inning of the day scoring nine runs on eight hits. It started with a RBI single by Schmitt, followed by a RBI double by Watson and a sacrifice fly by Montalvo. McLeer picked up his second double of the day scoring two more Chargers. Schmitt added an RBI double and Watson added another RBI single. The Owls scored one more run in the bottom of the third trailing 16-2 after three innings.
- The Chargers added three more in the top of the seventh as Wheeler got an RBI on a fielder's choice. MacLennan would later score on a balk before first year Matthew McDuff (East Providence, R.I.) picked up a triple to right field to score the final run.
- Junior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) picked up the win tossing five innings allowing both runs, while striking out three. First year Marshall Donahue (Montpelier, Vt.) was next tossing a clean sixth inning with his first collegiate punch out. Sophomore Erik Rohs (Lovettsville, Va.) closed things out with a clean seventh.
- Watson led the offense in the second game going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored, two doubles and a pair of RBIs. Choiniere registered a 4-for-6 game with three runs scored and three RBIs. McLeer added a 2-for-3 day with two doubles, two runs and three runs-batted-in. Schmitt ended the big day with a 2-for-4 game with three RBIs and two runs scored.
